UFC Fight Night Brisbane Tips: Mir vs Hunt
UFC Brisbane Fight Night 85
The UFC’s last trip to Brisbane will be forever remembered as the night Mark Hunt and Bigfoot Silva collided for one of the greatest heavyweight fights in MMA history. So it makes sense that on their return Hunt would again be headlining the card. This time he has been matched up with former champion and all time legend Frank Mir. Hunt is known for two things; ungodly punching power and a granite chin. He comes from a kickboxing background and is a former K1 champion with excellent striking fundamentals. He is very economical with his punches and tends not to throw until he sees an opening. At 5’10 he’s used to being physically outmatched, but makes up for it with an excellent understanding of timing and distance. He also moves around the octagon well for a man of his size. His best shots are an overhand left or uppercut, but he can knock opponents out with any strike. He has developed effective takedown defence, but once the fight hits the ground he is usually severely outmatched. Unfortunately for Hunt, the ground is Mir’s forte.
Las Vegas native, Frank Mir holds the record for most UFC heavyweight wins and most finishes. He has fought a who’s who of heavyweight greats and more often than not gets his hand raised. Mir is probably most famous for tapping out Brock Lesnar with a vicious heelhook, but his career has been hallmarked by incredible submission victories. Mir is a brilliant technical submission artist and if Hunt gives him half an opportunity will wrap up a limb and force a tap. He is a decent boxer, but can get reckless opening himself up for counters. The reason Mir hasn’t tapped out everyone he’s fought is because he doesn’t have a very strong offensive wrestling game. Hunt’s ability to stop the takedown will go a long way to deciding this fight.
Prediction: The winner of this fight will be the one who controls where it takes place. If it turns into a boxing match, Hunt will eventually back Mir up against the cage and put his lights out. But if Mir can make it dirty, initiate clinches and force the fight to the floor, he is just as likely to get a finish. I can make a good case for both but I think Frank Mir has a bigger advantage on the ground than Hunt does on the feet and I think there’s good value in him to win by Submission.
