UFC 205 Preview and Betting Tips

In April MMA was finally legalized in New York, paving the way for the UFC to make its debut in the world’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden. The fight chosen to headline this historic event is Conor McGregor’s quest to become the first fighter in UFC history to concurrently hold belts in two divisions. The Irishman is the biggest draw the sport has known and this card may break UFC 100s PPV buy rate. His opponent is newly crowned lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.

Conor McGregor has stated all along that the division he is most comfortable in is lightweight and this is the first time he will fight at that weight in the UFC. While he beat Nate Diaz in the rematch, their two fights destroyed the air of invincibility McGregor had around him up until that point. His striking looked as crisp as ever and he added in a lot of leg kicks and counters. But he wasn’t able to keep up with Diaz’s pace and looked completely out of gas multiple times. McGregor struggled to deal with Diaz’s reach and high volume southpaw boxing.

Alvarez is a shorter orthodox boxer, who McGregor should be much more comfortable with. McGregor is constantly evolving, but his general striking blue print is pretty well laid out at this point. He likes to keep opponents off balance with flashy manoeuvres and waits for opportunities to counter with his incredible left hand. He uses movement and footwork to cut angles and get inside opponents defence. In 3 of his last 4 fights he has been dominated on the ground and while Alvarez is not an elite wrestler he will certainly be looking to test McGregor on the mat.

Eddie Alvarez upset Rafael Dos Anjos with a first round KO to earn the lightweight title in July. Despite being a well-respected veteran of the sport, this is only Alvarez’s 5th fight in the UFC as he has spent the majority of his career in rival organisations. He earned his title shot with two razor close split decisions over Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis.

Alvarez is a boxer first and foremost, but is well rounded wherever the fight takes place. He is adept at using either a high pressure game or a counter based stick and move approach. While he has good footwork, he tends to get flat footed if his opponent starts to hit him and he doesn’t want to get into a firefight with McGregor. He doesn’t have a strong traditional wrestling game, but he is good at chaining takedowns from the fence. Alvarez isn’t known for submissions, but he does have a very effective rear naked choke, the submission that Diaz used to tap McGregor at UFC 196.

Out of the fighters at the very pinnacle of the lightweight division, I think Alvarez is the easiest stylistic match up for McGregor. He enjoys fighting orthodox opponents and loves having the reach advantage. While Alvarez will back himself on the feet against McGregor, he will have much more success implementing a grappling strategy. However, he will need to set up his takedowns against the cage because McGregor will be waiting with intentionally game-planned counters for lazy takedowns. If Alvarez is going to win, it will be ugly, he will need to avoid McGregor’s weapons and reduce the space he has to work. Alvarez is just too hittable for mine and I think McGregor may have to endure some moments of inactivity, but he will eventually find Alvarez’s chin.
