UFC 200 – Brock Lesnar vs Mark Hunt

The latest chapter in the never ending Jon Jones/Daniel Cormier saga has seen former champion Jones flagged for a failed PED test. Jones has been subsequently pulled from the fight, leaving UFC 200 without a main event just 72 hours out. Luckily the card is still stacked from top to bottom with some of the best and most interesting match ups the UFC can put together. One such matchup is Brock Lesnar vs Mark Hunt.

WWE champion Lesnar retired from the UFC 5 years due to his struggle with the disease diverticulitis. Now back to 100% he is returning to avenge his final two disappointing octagon appearances. A college wrestling Phenom, Lesnar began his professional wrestling career in 2000 and quickly rose to the top of the sport. Not content with just the rehearsed version he decided to transfer his outrageous physical gifts to the octagon and in 2008 captured the UFC Heavyweight championship. At 6”3 and 130kg of pure muscle, Lesnar has one of the most intimidating physiques in all of sport and he’s relied heavily on those genetic gifts throughout his MMA career. Lesnar is an awkward, clunky striker and never looks comfortable on the feet. But if he does connect cleanly with those colossal fists he can put away any man as evidenced by his KO of MMA legend Randy Couture to claim the title. He also has poor striking defense and has never reacted well to be hit. However on the mat it’s a completely different story. Despite his size, Lesnar is extremely explosive and bulldozes opponents to the ground. No one has been immune to the Lesnar takedown, even NCAA champion Cain Velasquez was momentarily put on his back. Once on top he uses otherworldly strength to hold opponents in place and makes mincemeat of their face with short sharp shots. If Lesnar gets on top of Hunt, I can see no route for survival or escape.

Hunt has also had an interesting ride to the top echelons of heavyweight MMA. A former K1 PRIDE grand prix champion (kickboxings highest honour), Hunt transferred to the octagon with mixed success. After losing 6 straight fights in the first round, Hunt’s MMA experiment appeared over. But despite being in his late thirties Hunt was able to turn it around and showed marked improvement in take down defense allowing him to unleash the full fury of his offensive arsenal. Three years later, Hunt fought for the interim heavyweight title and despite eventually losing, put in a valiant effort. Hunt is still very much a striker first, he has a potent mixture of brilliant technique and life-altering power; he is often cited as the hardest hitter in MMA. He has a beautiful understanding of distance and timing that only come with a lifetime of training. His Achilles heel continues to be the ground game. He is much harder to take down now, but if you are going to beat Hunt that is how you have to do it.

Prediction: What makes this fight so interesting is that Lesnar strengths and weaknesses are the exact opposite of Hunts. Lesnar will need to close the distance and force Hunt into the grappling realm, whereas Hunt will need to slow the pace, keep Lesnar on the outside with his jab and wait for an opening to unleash his signature fury. While there is a huge chance that Hunt gets the early KO, I think if these two were to fight 100 times Lesnar gets this fight to the mat and pounds out a victory more than 50% of the time. For that reason I like the underdog here. Especially when combined with Sportsbet money back if your fighter loses in the first round, because either way this should be over quick.
