UFC 199 Betting Tips: Luke Rockhold vs Michael Bisping

Rockhold will defend his middleweight belt for the first time at UFC 199 and while it’s not the hotly anticipated rematch against Weidman, Rockhold will still find himself against a deserving and willing opponent. Rockhold won the title by dismantling Weidman on the ground in December at UFC 194 and he is in the midst of a 5 fight win streak with 5 finishes. At 6”3 he holds a reach advantage over everyone in the division and he predominantly uses kicks which only emphasize the advantage. He also punches well and has a particularly effective counter right hook. He is a solid wrestler with a sensational BJJ game, particularly when he’s on top and can rain down elbows or set up a power submission.

It’s unfortunate that Bisping will finally get his title shot on short notice as a late injury replacement, but it might actually be an advantage for him. Rockhold seems to be looking past and underestimating Bisping and he does that at his own peril. Bisping is primarily a striker; he does his best work at range, when he can duck in and out unloading crisp combinations. He doesn’t have a lot of power but when he does get an opponent hurt he is excellent at piling on the pressure to get the TKO. He doesn’t have much of an offensive grappling game but uses good wrestling and balance to fend off opponent’s takedowns. He also has solid BJJ defence. Bisping’s best traits are the intangibles; heart and cardio. He will continue coming forward and unless the short notice really affects him, will be the one pushing the pace for all 5 rounds.

This is a pretty cut and dry fight to breakdown. Rockhold is the far more dangerous striker and grappler and eventually he will hurt Bisping and put him away. If Bisping is going to win I think a finish is unlikely, so he will need to out volume Rockhold for 5 rounds and avoid getting finished which seems just as unlikely. However I do think the books are underrating Bisping, he isn’t going to go away without a fight and I expect him to take this into the later rounds.

Bet: Luke Rockhold to win in round 3,4,5 – $4.50 @ Ladbrokes

In the co-main event, Dominick Cruz will look to defend his belt against long-time rival Urijah Faber. Faber became the first and only person to beat Cruz when he caught him in a slick guillotine back in 2007. Cruz has since levelled the ledger by taking a decision at UFC 132 in 2011, so now we get the decider nearly 10 years later. Cruz seems to be in the best form of his career and his perpetual motion and unorthodox footwork make him a nightmare to touch let alone beat. Faber’s only chance is to catch another opportunistic submission during a transition, but I can’t see this going any other way than a dominant Dominick Cruz decision.

Bet: Dominick Cruz by unamious decision – $2.15 @ Ladbrokes
