UFC 194: Jose Aldo vs Conor McGregor

This fight will be the culmination of 12 months of unprecedented build up. McGregor’s devastating in-ring exploits and slick turn of phrase has turned him into the UFC’s most polarizing figure and one of its biggest pay-per-view draws. But for the all smack he has talked and all the opponents he has knocked out, his sights have always been set upon the man at the top of the mountain, Jose Aldo.

Aldo hasn’t lost a fight in over 10 years. He is the only ever featherweight champion and he has made mincemeat of a litany of the UFC’s best to claim his sport amongst the sport’s pound-for pound best. On Sunday McGregor will finally get the chance to prove himself against the best the UFC has to offer.

Jose Aldo

– brilliant technical muay thai, incredibly fast and accurate combinations
– the most damaging leg kicks in the UFC, well disguised and almost impossible to counter
– high level BJJ black belt with a good wrestling game to go along
– strong striking defence, really gets hit with power shots
– incredible takedown defence, defends the takedown 91% of the time

– extended injury lay off prior to this fight
– questionable cardio, has slowed down towards the end of fights
– lacks one punch KO power and a lot of his fights go to decision

Conor McGregor

– the hardest puncher in the featherweight division, hits more like a middleweight
– utilizes revolutionary movement, creates lots of dead space in octagon
– iron chin, has taken some massive shots without so much as flinching
– pressure fighter, constantly coming forward
– massive for the division and will have a significant size and reach advantage

– untested over 5 rounds
– susceptible to the takedown and being controlled on the ground
– has never fought a striker on Aldo’s level
– weak striking defence, too reliant on chin to absorb strikes

This is an incredibly tough one to call and it could end a multitude of ways. McGregor’s takedown defence must improve from the Mendes fight (rumour is he had a partially torn ACL in going in), because if Aldo is able to get him to the ground he will dominate. Striking, it’s the superior technician vs the unpredictable power puncher. If Aldo wants to fight on the feet, he is going to need to attack McGregor’s legs to make him less dangerous. However I think it’s very unlikely Aldo can finish McGregor and I don’t think he can last the whole 25 minutes without succumbing to McGregor’s power game. I like McGregor to get it done by TKO in the 3rd round.
