UFC 192: Cormier Vs. Gustafsson Betting Tip

Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson do battle for the belt vacated by former champion Jon Jones as he continues to deal with the fallout from a felony hit and run charge. Cormier is an Olympic wrestler and Gustafsson is a high level kick-boxer which makes for an intriguing striker vs grappler affair. Gustafsson is most well-known for his epic five round war with Jon Jones in which he so nearly stole the title from his much fancied opponent. He will come into this fight with a massive height and reach advantage and will need to use every inch of it if he is going to beat Cormier. His striking game is set up with a constant jab and finished with a powerful right straight and uppercut. His aggressiveness on the feet does leave him open to counters and he is one of the most hittable fighters amongst elite light heavyweights. Upon entering the UFC he was very one-dimensional and suffered his first loss at the hands of a grappling specialist. But since then he has worked incredibly hard on his ground game and can now hold his own with almost anyone in the division.

Daniel Cormier isn’t just anyone; he is one of the best wrestlers in the world. He was a standout at high school and college level and if it wasn’t for a weight cutting issue could well be an Olympic gold medallist. He has phenomenal takedowns and ground control and is capable of slamming any opponent on their back WWE style. He is the inferior striker in this fight, but should be able to hold his own especially if he can keep the distance short.

Prediction: This fight will come down to who is controlling where the action takes place. If it’s a 5 round wrestling match, Cormier will win a dominant decision. But, if Gustafsson can keep it standing for long periods he has an excellent chance to win rounds or even force a TKO stoppage. Despite the massive height and reach advantage, I think Cormier’s chin will hold up under Gustafsson’s striking barrage and he will dirty box up against the fence, land takedowns and do damage with ground and pound.
