Rosehill Racing: 2017 Expressway Stakes Betting Tips

January 27, 2017 by Posted in Horse Racing Tips

The Group 2 Expressway Stakes is the feature race on the card at Rosehill Gardens this weekend and sees a field of 6 runners line up over 1200m.

The tempo should still be a reasonable one given Ball Of Muscle is engaged and he only knows one way of racing which is to go straight to the front. I expect we’ll see either Handfast or Attention sit outside of him, with Kuro midfield and both Music Magnate and Big Money at the rear.

Music Magnate is clearly the one they all have to beat and his price suggests as much as the even money favourite. First up last preparation he won the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes over this distance in what was a very similar lead up. He won two trials before winning that race first up and he’s done the same here leading into this. He’s never missed a place at the track or the distance and although he’ll have to come from the back of the field he should be too good.

Kuro comes up second favourite after a solid win in the Takeover Target Stakes at Gosford last start. He beat home Ball Of Muscle by 1.5L on that occasion but there’s a 1.5kg turnaround in the weights here, however that might not be enough to see the latter turn the tables. Kuro looks to be low flying this prep and if Music Magnate struggles for whatever reason it is reasonable to think this could be the winner.

As aforementioned, Ball Of Muscle carried all the weight in the Takeover Target Stakes and gets in better under weight-for-age conditions here. With the small field he should be able to run the race on his terms for Tim Clark and that could make him very hard to run down. The blinkers are applied once again and the tongue tie goes on for the first time.

Big Money is the outsider of the field and gets the booking of Hugh Bowman. He comes into this third up from a spell and it is important to note that he’s only missed the top two once from 6 starts when third up from a spell. He would need to have improved to be winning this though.

Godolphin’s only runner is Handfast, who resumes from a spell on the back of two trials. He is a stakes winner over 1400m an he did finish within a length of the winner in Group 3 company last prep but you’d think he would need to have improved in order to be winning against this field.

The final runner in the field is Attention for Team Snowden and I think this is where the value lies. He comes up $10 in the market and if you look back through his form from last prep you’ll see he ran 2nd by a nose to Winning Rupert over this distance. He was a Group 3 winner first up last prep over 1400m and went on to win a Group 2 over 1350m, so the talent is definitely there. He’s been off the track a fair while but he’s had a number of trials leading into this and if he is tuned up it wouldn’t surprise me to see him cause an upset here.

Overall it does look a nice race for Music Magnate to resume in and he’s followed a very similar path to the one he did last year before going on to win a Group 1. Happy to back him at the even money but definitely worth having something on Attention at double figure odds.
