Group 1 racing returns to Sydney this weekend with the $1 million Golden Rose for the three-year olds.

A field of 14 is set to line up over the 1400m, with the track currently rated a Soft 5. There is rain predicted, however, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the track downgraded throughout the day.

This looks like it may be run at a fairly hot tempo with El Divino, Thronum, Derryn and Chamalu all possibilities to go in search of the lead. Ultimately I think we will see El Divino hold the rail from barrier 4, with Thronum spearing across from barrier 13 to sit outside him. Chamalu may sit on their backs from the inside gate, while Derryn could be ridden a touch quieter today.

I think we’ll see Impending make use of barrier 2 to hold a prominent position, and the same could be said about Omei Sword who starts from barrier 3. Mediterranean will be closer to the speed from barrier 5 and should get a charmed run, while Nikitas, Derryn and Good Standing will make up the rest of the midfield division.

Astern draws barrier 12 which could be very problematic – either he will have to go all the way back or risk getting caught wide if McDonald tries to slot in closer to the speed. Purton will settle Yankee Rose back in the field from barrier 9, along with Divine Prophet who will have to come from a long way back once again. The two Queenslanders, Oink and O’Reilly Cyrus, may be the two backmarkers of the field.

YANKEE ROSE goes on top for me, but not with any great confidence in a very competitive race. Simply, if she comes back at her best she wins in my opinion. Her trials were very sloppy but the blinkers seem to have done the trick. Her only run at 1400m was a dominant win in the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes, and I’m willing to bet that she comes here in good enough shape to win.

ASTERN shapes as the hardest to beat on the back of his impressive win over Star Turn in the Run To The Rose. Barrier 12 is obviously my greatest concern with him, as he risks getting caught 3-wide if they attempt to settle in midfield. However, he’s come back a very good three-year-old and with any luck he goes close.

Speaking of impressive wins, DIVINE PROPHET’s last-to-first win first up from a spell was just that. Though this is a harder test, the step up to 1400m will suit him and he looks good enough to be right in the mix here. He’ll have to come from a long way back again, but you wouldn’t rule it out after what he produced last start.

OMEI SWORD and Joao Moreira have been the talk of the town during the week, after Chris Waller booked the Hong Kong-based superstar to ride his filly after her late acceptance. She looks to have returned a very special filly, with a dominant first up win in the Silver Shadow Stakes seeing her plummet into early favouritism for this race. She draws perfectly here and despite what has been said during the week, the booking of Moreira is a huge plus.

The best value in the race looks to be in the form of IMPENDING and MEDITERRANEAN. Impending encountered plenty of problems in the straight in the Run To The Rose, and would have finished much closer to Astern had she had clear running. From barrier 2 she will have a head start on some of the other fancies, and $11 is a good price if you like her. Mediterranean, on the other hand, will relish the step up to 1400m and will settle much closer to the speed from barrier 5. I think he gets the run of the race and the Snowdens are quite bullish about his chances, and they certainly are not to be taken lightly.

Ultimately I think if YANKEE ROSE produces her best she will win this, but Godolphin hold a strong hand in the form of Astern and Impending. Divine Prophet has definite winning claims and Chris Waller’s filly Omei Sword could very well blow them all away.

1st YANKEE ROSE
2nd ASTERN
3rd OMEI SWORD
4th IMPENDING
