Australian Chinese Primary Industry Council Summer Sprint 1000m

Two early scratchings means we are left with a field of just eight in the feature sprint in Sydney on Saturday which contains a couple of handy horses.

The forecast isn’t good in Sydney with showers predicted for the most part of Friday and a shower or two predicted for Saturday. The track is currently rated a Soft 7 and given the way the Randwick track soaks up water we will probably be racing somewhere in that range on Saturday.

The pace in the race will definitely come from the Brisbane horse GOJO MIMO and he should be joined by Melbourne visitor EARTHLY TIGER. I expect to see both BOSS LANE and INSIDE JOB make use of their favourable draws to take up a position behind the leaders, with DIAMOND OASIS and possibly FELINES settling just worse than midfield. BIG MONEY will likely settle towards the rear of the field upon his return, as will regular backmarker TAHITIAN BLACK.

1000m races are always run at a good clip and with two regular early-speed horses engaged I think we’ll see a good tempo throughout.

This looks a very tricky race to figure out and the market seems to agree – the top four horses currently sit under the $5.00 mark.

With the Soft track I’m expecting, only three horses really appeal to me in this.

BIG MONEY resumes from a fairly long spell and he’s having a crack at this race purely due to the weather forecast. He loves it wet, with 4 wins and 2 placings from 7 runs on wet ground. He’s never finished outside the top 2 in his five attempts over 1000m, and he also holds a reasonable first-up record. Lumps the big weight but with 60kg after the apprentice’s claim he looks to get in fairly here.

The obvious concern with Big Money is whether he will be ready after such a long time off the track, and because this race wasn’t originally on his radar.

He will have to beat Joe Pride’s sprinter DIAMOND OASIS who recorded a good win at the Gold Coast last start. He won that quite cosily and despite rising to 59.5kg in the weights here, he has proven before that he can carry weight over these short journeys. The wet ground should pose no problems for him either.

The final runner that I’ve given a chance to is FELINES, to be ridden by Brenton Avdulla. Her win two starts ago when she was first up from a spell at Randwick was very good. I’m prepared to put a line through her last start where she was well beaten by Diamond Oasis due to her covering plenty of ground from barrier 14. Barrier 10 means they will go back in search of cover and she could run them down with no weight.

I’m prepared to risk the $3.50 favourite BOSS LANE today due to the fact he’s had 8 starts on Soft ground for 0 placings!

All the other horses engaged have also shown a disliking to Soft ground, so I’ll be sticking with the three mentioned above who have proven ability in the wet.

1st DIAMOND OASIS ($3.80 at Sportsbet)
2nd BIG MONEY ($6.00 at Luxbet)
3rd FELINES ($5.00 at CrownBet)
4th GOJO MIMO ($9.00 at Sportsbet)
