Randwick Racing: 2017 Canterbury Stakes Betting Tips

March 3, 2017 by Posted in Horse Racing Tips

The Group 1 Canterbury Stakes for the sprinters is one of two Group 1’s on the card at Randwick this weekend on what is set to be a very, very wet track.

Sydney’s copped 125ml of rain for the week and there’s a further 30-50mm predicted for Saturday alone so if the meeting does indeed go ahead it will be a Heavy 9 or 10.

Expect Music Magnate to lead here, along with possibly Ugo Fascolo who has his first start for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. Le Romain should box seat with Impending, Too Good To Refuse and Japonisme could settle worse than midfield, with Chautauqua and Hauraki likely to settle at the rear.

Chautauqua comes up favourite at $3 and I’ll be taking him on at that price. He resumed with a respectable run first up in the Rubiton Stakes but he looks to have lost a bit of his zip, which suggests the step up in trip here should suit him. His final 100m or so was good, but I’m just not convinced he’s at his very best right now and until he shows it I won’t be backing him.

For that reason I’ll be with Music Magnate here who resumed with a good win in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes at Rosehill. He’s since won a trial by over 3 lengths and comes into this in the form that saw him win the Group 1 Doomben 10,000. He’s never missed a place second up from four starts and more importantly, he’s undefeated on wet tracks. The 1300m probably suits him a bit better than it does Le Romain and so he goes narrowly on top.

Le Romain can definitely win, however, and I’ll be backing him to cover losses. I was super impressed by his first up win over 1200m when carrying 61kg to victory. His best is probably over a mile but he’s extremely versatile and proved over 1200m that he is more than capable. He’s finished first and second at his two starts on Heavy ground and his record at Randwick is phenomenal, having finished in the top two at six of his seven starts here.

The big improver should be Impending. godolphin have flown Hong Kong based Zac Purton over to ride three of their horses including this one. First up he had the blows in the market which suggests he was very underdone and O’Shea has said he has improved significantly since that run. The blinkers go back on here and his breeding suggests wet ground should be no problem. His only start on wet ground so far has been a third placing to Astern and Star Turn. O’Shea also said they won this race with Holler last year, but Impending is a much better horse than his stablemate. At double figure odds he could be the value.

The big unknown is the New Zealander Ugo Fascolo who has his first Australian start here for Waterhouse and Bott. He’s a Group 2 winner over 1400m and a Group 1 winner over 1600m and while it may appear his best is over slightly further, he won over 1100m and 1200m on his way to those victories so may be sharp enough to feature here.

Keen to stick with Music Magnate and save on Le Romain. Wary of Chautauqua and Impending the value.
