ODI Cricket: England vs New Zealand Series Preview
New Zealand resumes their England tour with the first of their five ODIs on Tuesday 9th June. The visitors are the current World Cup finalists while the hosts are going through their usual ‘find a competent ODI outfit’ routine. New Zealand is playing a fearless brand of cricket while England is trying once again to learn how 50-over cricket is played.
Brendon McCullum is leading a side which is probably the best in their history. Mike Hesson has shown the value of trusting the ability of his captain and players. Retaining the core of a team that entertained everyone at the World Cup, New Zealand looks a settled side.
The only thought right now for McCullum is to find a long term replacement for the retired Daniel Vettori. The affable spinner used to control the game for the pacers to exhibit themselves. However, the batting order remains the same and gives them an edge. The team is stacked with many stroke players and slotting into ODI mode from the Tests is not difficult.
England, on the other hand, is trying to find a new direction under Eoin Morgan. Crashing out of the group stages in World Cup has given another reason to find suitable players for the format. It is no secret that England has fallen way behind every other team in ODIs.
England sides generally fall short of dynamism required for shorter formats. But Morgan has a lot of stroke players at his disposal for this series. Ben Stokes, Alex hales, Jos Buttler and Jason Roy represent an exciting mix of unorthodox players. But the bigger question remains – will England find a way to catch up with the rest.
It is a huge opportunity for England to try and topple the World Cup finalists. But, it’s difficult to see New Zealand losing the series. William Hill offer odds of $1.36 for New Zealand to win.
Amidst many stroke makers, Grant Elliott provides the serene touch for the Kiwis. He could end up the highest run getter for the series and at odds of $11.00 offered by William Hill, it is a risk worth taking.
