NRL Betting Types

NRL betting

Sports bookmakers offer a range of different markets for NRL sports betting. The major two are match betting and future markets. These options relate to more markets, which give the punter a large variety of bets to choose from.

The most common and popular NRL betting types are:

Head to Head – This bet type involves the punter betting on who they think will win the match. The bet will be paid out if the team you pick is victorious. Head to Head betting can be best used if the odds are favourable for your predicted result.

Line or Handicap – The bookmaker will select a team from the match that is the favourite to win. The bookmaker will then give a ‘line’ they believe is fair for the favoured side to be handicapped, whilst the team that is predicted to lose will be given the advantage of added points.

For example, let’s say the Manly Sea Eagles are favourites against the Newcastle Knights and the bookmakers have given a handicap of 6.5 points. If you bet on the Sea Eagles at the line, you will need them to win by 7 points or more to win the bet, but if you bet on the Knights at the line they can lose by up to 6 points and you’ll still win your bet.

So if final score was Sea Eagles 28 and Knights 18 with the Sea Eagles winning by 10, then all bets placed on the Sea Eagles -6.5 would be paid out as winner whilst the bets placed on the Knights +6.5 would lose.

Margin – This bet type involves the bookmaker setting the odds for each team to win by a certain margin. The most commonly used margins in NRL are teams to win 1-12 or 13+. So for the example match mentioned above, the Sea Eagles won by 10 points, so betting the Sea Eagles to win 1-12 would be paid as a winner, whilst all other bets would lose.

The margin bet can be used to increase the odds of a predicted result when the outcome is likely to be close or a team winning by a large margin.

Live betting – Betting live on sports involves contacting a sports betting market via phone call. However, that has recently changed thanks to ‘Click to call’ by William Hill which allows online live bets to be placed. Live betting will give slightly reduced odds.

Futures – These bets include predicting a result weeks before the outcome will be occurring. These generally involve premiership winner, wooden spoon, top 8, bottom 8, minor premiers, Dally M, etc.
