National Football League (NFL) Season Preview – 2015/16

September 8, 2015 by Posted in Betting Tips, NFL Tips

The National Football League is days away from commencing and attempting to predict what will happen throughout a tough season is incredibly difficult.

Nevertheless we take a look at the year ahead and make some bold predictions on season outcomes in our first-ever NFL betting tips.

AFC East

The four sides:
– New England Patriots
– New York Jets
– Buffalo Bills
– Miami Dolphins

The Patriots don’t receive much of a challenge in the conference for the AFC East title and their biggest issue could be getting through the opening four matches without superstar Tom Brady. The quarterback is suspended for the first month of football due to the “deflategate” scandal that happened during the AFC Championship match last season. Footballs were found to be purposely deflated to allow for Brady to grip the ball easier in the wet conditions. The defending Superbowl champions should be able to at least come away with a positive record without Brady whilst the other three sides are still in the rebuilding phase with the Dolphins the only team that will be in playoff contention as a wildcard.

TIP: Patriots @ $1.45 with William Hill

AFC North

The four sides:
– Baltimore Ravens
– Cincinnati Bengals
– Pittsburgh Steelers
– Cleveland Browns

This could become one of the closest conferences in the NFL with three sides being real contenders with the Browns to struggle throughout the season. The Steelers smashed the Bengals on the last day of the competition last year to secure their place in the finals series but unfortunately for them will be without two key players to start the season as Le’veon Bell and Martavis Bryant sit out due to a league imposed suspension.

The Bengals have been busy over the offseason and it is time for quarterback Andy Dalton to prove he was worth the six year, 100 million dollar contract he signed three years ago. They have a loaded backfield with A.J. Green, Mohamed Sahu and a healthy Marvin Jones. He will need to find his receivers more often then he throws picks or he could find himself on the way out the door for AJ McCarron to replace him as the starting quarterback.

The Baltimore Ravens won the Superbowl in 2012, since then there has been a lot of turn over of personnel and quarterback Joe Flacco hasn’t been able to recapture the form that saw him carry his team all the way. Their 2014 season was tarnished from the beginning with the Ray Rice debacle hovering over them but they still managed to make the playoffs, defeat the Steelers before falling to the eventual champions the Patriots.

TIP: Steelers @ $3.25 with Centrebet

AFC South

The four sides:
– Indianapolis Colts
– Houston Texans
– Jacksonville Jaguars
– Tennessee Titans

The AFC South will likely be the most one-sided conference in the league with the Colts to be challenging for the best record in the league. Andrew Luck has proved he is an elite quarterback and he will only improve with more pieces to the puzzle being added around him. The Texans will be in the playoff picture but the Jaguars and Titans are in a rebuilding stage and will finish with very poor records.

TIP: Colts @ $1.20 with Sportsbet

AFC West

The four sides:
– San Diego Chargers
– Denver Broncos
– Kansas City Chiefs
– Oakland Raiders

The outright favourite is for the Peyton Manning lead Broncos to become the champions of the AFC West. However, the Chiefs should not be counted out as they have improved in the offseason. Last year they were appalling at throwing the football as not one of their wide receivers scored a touchdown from a pass. That is incredibly hard to believe in a pass first league. They have been able to sign Jeremy Maclin which gives quarterback Alex Smith a better than average receiver to target. They also have emerging talent in the tight end position with Albert Wilson and Travis Kelce looking solid last season and with Jamaal Charles in the side, they will always be dangerous when running the football. Whilst their offence has improved their defence has stayed much the same, which is a massive positive for the Chiefs as their defence is one of the best in the league. Take all that in whilst you look at the Broncos who have lost a lot of key players, added a coach that has an offensive system that Manning doesn’t suit and also his ageing arm and you have a conference that is up for grabs.

TIP: Chiefs @ $6 with Sportsbet

NFC East

The four sides:
– Washington Redskins
– Dallas Cowboys
– Philadelphia Eagles
– New York Giants

Another close conference will see three teams fighting for the top spot whilst the Redskins will look to rebuild this season and hope quarterback Griffin III can make it through the year injury free. Arguably the Cowboys strongest performer last season running back Demarco Murray has moved to rivals the Eagles in what is a big boost for the Philadelphia side but a lot of Murray’s good play came on the back of the strongest offensive line in football. It is also apparent that a lot of running backs have injury ravaged and poor seasons a year after taking a hefty load. The Giants don’t quite have enough pieces at the moment to contend with the best as their offensive line is questionable, their running game non-existent and their defence is sub-par. Question marks surround the quarterback option for the Eagles whilst the Cowboys should be near the top once again.

TIP: Cowboys @ $2.50 with William Hill

NFC North

The four sides:
– Chicago Bears
– Minnesota Vikings
– Green Bay Packers
– Detroit Lions

This conference should be another one that is a clear cut victory as the only way the Packers will be challenged is if Aaron Rodgers is injured. Despite the ACL injury to their best receiver Jordy Nelson, Rodgers has enough pieces of the puzzle to again lead his side to a Superbowl. They only just missed out on an appearance last season to a couple of crazy plays that saw them lose to the Seahawks.

TIP: Packers @ $1.45 with Sportsbet

NFC South

The four sides:
– New Orleans Saints
– Carolina Panthers
– Atlanta Falcons
– Tampa Bay Buccaneers

This conference will be very interesting as all the teams are relatively equally matched with the Buccaneers the outsiders but they should still put up a fight in a majority of their matches. The number one overall pick Jameis Winston was picked by the Bucs and whether he can adjust to the NFL quickly will determine how successful their season is. The Panthers won 5 of their last 6 games to end the season last year and that allowed them to clinch a playoff spot in the underachieving NFC South. It will likely come down to which quarterback has more success out of Newton with the Panthers and Drew Brees with the Saints.

TIP: Saints @ $2.75 with Sportsbet

NFC West

The four sides:
– San Fransisco 49ers
– Seattle Seahawks
– Arizona Cardinals
– St Louis Rams

Another clear cut conference will see the Seahawks defence be too strong for its rivals. They have been the top team over the last two seasons and if it wasn’t for an incredibly play call at the end of the 2015 Superbowl they could have been back-to-back champions. The option not to run the ball with arguably the best running back in the game would still haunt the team and they will come out with something to prove this season. The 49ers will have the interest of Australians and rugby league fans as Jarryd Hayne will be a part of the 53-man roster. It still remains to be seen on how much of an impact he will make in the NFL and whether he will see minimal or substantial game time – it is likely he will be used as a punt returner and on special teams as opposed to the running back position.

TIP: Seahawks @ $1.30 with William Hill

MVP of the League

The MVP award is notoriously given to the best quarterback in the league that has been able to be dominant throughout the season. It is no surprise this position generally receives the award as whilst they earn a lot of praise for success they also have to deal with the criticism when the team loses. Andrew Luck is now in his 4th year in the league and the Colts have managed to put a lot of important pieces around him to ensure that the offence will be dominant in the 2015/16 season. Frank Gore at running back will allow the running game and play action passing to improve whilst Andre Johnson and Phillip Dorsett will be great targets for him and he should surpass his tally of 40 TD last season.

TIP: Andrew Luck @ $6.50 with Sportsbet

Most Passing Yards

The same reasons as above will see Andrew Luck have the most passing yards in the league. He will have a point to prove after losing to the Patriots in the championship game last season and the controversy surrounding the balls should ignite the fire within.

TIP: Andrew Luck @ $4 with William Hill

Most Receiving Yards

The Giants had a slow start to the season last year under the new offence of Ben Mcadoo. Towards the end of the year the side started to kick it up a gear and quarterback Eli Manning began to flourish and so did his wide receivers – especially rookie Odell Beckham junior. He was best known for taking his spectacular catch but he was a consistent player and target as he took 91 receptions in 12 matches for a total of 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns. Manning will no doubt be looking to the youngster again this season and he could be in for a tremendous season.

TIP: Odell Beckham Jnr @ $8 with William Hill

Most Running Yards

After spending the 2014/15 seasons on the sideline after being found guilty of inflicting reckless and negligent injury to his child, Adrian Peterson returns to the Minnesota Vikings team fresh and healthy. The former MVP will be looking to recapture his form. The running back is reaching the latter period of his career and he will want to finish on a high note and be remembered for his performances on the field rather than his indecencies off it.

TIP: Adrian Peterson @ $5.50 with Centrebet

Superbowl Champion

To predict the Superbowl champion before the season is underway is near impossible. Unforseen events such as injuries to key personnel, off-field issues and players exceeding expectations can all alter a teams success or failure. However, with the Seattle Seahawks team remaining largely intact and with their defence being by far the strongest of the league it would be silly to expect them not to be competing for their third Superbowl appearance in as many years. However, if there is an offence that can overcome their defence it will be the Indianapolis Colts with Andrew Luck having his breakout season.

TIP: Colts @ $10 with Sportsbet
