Hughes Chauffeured Limousines R N Irwin Stakes

Race 6, 1100m – Group 3

The South Australian racing carnival is only two weeks away and we are starting to see some decent races in the lead up to the three week program. Saturday’s card at Morphettville features two Listed races and two Group 3’s – one of which is the RN Irwin Stakes for the sprinters.

Darren Weir holds a strong hand here with two of the top three market elects, while the ex-Peter Moody trained Runway Star has her first start for Phillip Stokes, who also has Nostradamus entered, formerly trained by Team Hawkes.

There doesn’t actually seem to be a whole lot of pace in the race, which is odd for an 1100m contest. Sandhill Flash will most likely find the lead from barrier 6, and he could be joined by I Am Gypsy who I expect to come across from barrier 10.

Northern Zhar will look to slot in up near the speed from out wide, while Karacatis should get a lovely run just off the speed from barrier 4. Heart Of A Lion may need some luck finding a position in midfield, while Tuscan Sling will utilize barrier 1 to hold a spot on the rail in midfield. The same could be said for La Passe from barrier 2, and Runway Star should get the run of the race from barrier 3. Towards the rear of the field is most likely to be Nostradamus, Cashed and Daytona Grey.

To my eye, only luck in running is going to stop Tuscan Sling winning this and the $2 on offer really does look a decent bet despite there being a few handy runners engaged. This mare is absolutely flying and was only beaten by Azkadellia last last, who has since come out and won a Group 1 in Sydney! All she needs is a touch of luck from barrier 1 and she will be too good I’d think.

Her stablemate La Passe resumes here and is one of the best horses in the race, but she may just find the 1100m a touch short of her best. Her two Group 2 wins last prep came over 1400m so I’d expect her to be running on hard over the final furlong or so.

Runway Star looks the most likely challenger to the Weir pair after scoring a tough win first up from a spell last start. She has her first start for new trainer Phillip Stokes here, and while her 2nd up record hasn’t been very inspiring in the past, she has had a 40 day break leading into this which could make the difference.

Daytona Grey recorded a huge win first up but shoots up significantly in the weights, while I Am Gypsy ran 2nd in that race and could give a sight from on pace once again. Heart Of A Lion shot through the grades impressively last prep but may just need the run first up, while Northern Zhar can certainly bounce back if he gets any luck from the wide draw.

I do think the race is in the hands of Darren Weir and I find it very hard to see Tuscan Sling getting rolled here. The price looks good. La Passe is probably the best horse in the race but might find 1100m too sharp, while Runway Star, Northern Zhar, Heart Of A Lion and Daytona Grey could be the best of the locals.
