1PRINT Carlyon Stakes 1000m – Listed

Handy day of racing coming up at Mooney Valley this week and we have racing tips for the Carlyon Stakes.

The Carlyon Stakes is one of two Listed races on the card at Moonee Valley on Saturday and this one looks set to be an absolute cracker.

Several big names return ahead of the Spring with the likes of Shiraz, Keen Array ad Heatherly all making their returns to the track.

There looked to be plenty of speed in the race originally but with the scratchings of Wild Rain and Diamond Oasis, it doesn’t appear to be as hot out the front. However, there does still appear to be about 3 horses that will vie for the lead.

I don’t see anything other than Heatherly leading here, with Manihi Mischief possibly kicking up from barrier 1. Pretty Possum is the other one that could make this a speed battle early.

I expect Shiraz to be close enough from barrier 3 and he should get a lovely run, while Iconic could come across from barrier 12 to sit on the speed. General Truce will position in midfield, as will Atmospherical from barrier 9, while Viddora and O’Malley will look for cover behind horses from wide barriers.

Well Sprung will get back in the field and I expect Keen Array to take cover from barrier 15. The New Zealander Passing Shot is one I’m not sure about but from barrier 5 he should get a nice run behind the speed.

I do think Heatherly will be hard to beat here and if she finds the front without burning too much fuel early she will be hard to run down in the short straight. However, if she gets caught in a speed battle early it may set the race up for those camping in behind her.

Shiraz is one of those that should get a comfortable run and won’t be too far away from the leaders. From barrier 3 he should sit right on their heels and get all the favours, and his first up record is 4 wins from 6 starts so he should be ready to fire here. Maybe better over 1100m or 1200m but I see him as a main player here.

Keen Array is a horse that just didn’t come up last prep. He showed massive potential as an early 3YO, running 2nd behind Japonisme in the Coolmoore Stud Stakes. His latest jump out was very sharp so if he goes back from barrier 15 and gets the tempo expected he may be able to mow them down late.

O’Malley is a horse that has showed quite a bit of ability to date. He has 4 wins from 8 starts and has won both starts when first up from a spell. He comes into this first up on the back of two good trials and he is another that will appreciate the hot tempo up front.

Atmospherical has claims on the back of a strong 3rd behind Wild Rain first up in the Sir John Monash Stakes, while Viddora is another with strong claims after winning impressively first up in Adelaide. That form has since stood up very well through Ocean Embers and her record of 5 wins from 8 starts at the distance holds her in good stead.

The big query is Passing Shot who has won 3 of his last 4 races in NZ. Dwayne Dunn is a strong booking so it will be interesting to see what the market tells us in the lead up to the race.

I’m happy to stick with Shiraz here who should get the gun run just off the pace.
