Ipswich Racing: 2017 Ipswich Betting Tips
The 2017 Listed Ipswich Cup is the feature race of the day in Queensland with 14 runners set to line up over 2150m.
Interestingly, history shows this race has typically been won by horses down in the weights. Maurus won with 58kg which was a weight carrying record.
The track is rated a Soft 7 at present but with a bit of rain predicted it would be no surprise to see it downgraded to a Heavy 8 at some stage.
Considering how hard it is to win carrying a big weight in this race I’ll be taking on both Benzini and Jumbo Prince. Benzini drops back from Group 2 company where he ran 4th in the Brisbane Cup, while Jumbo Prince finished a disappointing 12th in the Premiers Cup in Group 3 company last start (Benzini also finished 4th in that race).
The favourite for the race is Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s mare Sort After, who carries 54.5kg She finished 4th in the Group 2 Queen of the South Stakes two starts ago before running 2nd to Exocet in the Centaurea Stakes last time out. She draws a tricky gate in barrier 11 but she has the speed to overcome that so expect her to roll forward and lead the field with leading jockey Corey Brown in the saddle.
The horse that I really want to back, however, is Self Sense at $10. His form does look very average on paper – certainly being beaten 10 lengths in the Brisbane Cup last start doesn’t look great – but the key here is the wet track. From 10 starts on Soft ground he has 3 wins and 4 placings, while on Heavy ground he has 2 wins and 2 placings from 5 starts. From barrier 2 he will probably get a fair way back in the field, but I’m expecting him to improve sharply with conditions to suit and just 54kg on his back.
Tessastock is another to include at big odds.
1st SELF SENSE
2nd JUMBO PRINCE
3rd BENZINI
4th SORT AFTER
