India vs Australia 1st ODI Betting Tips

September 16, 2017 by Posted in Cricket Tips

The continuous cricket being played these days mean there are very few marquee events that excite the fans. But, even amid this melee, the contests between India and Australia keep the fans on tenterhooks. The Kangaroos are touring India for a five match ODI series starting with the series opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, September 17th.

The context for this series has been setup during the Test series that was played earlier this year. Steve Smith’s side punched above its weight to run India close in that series that was eventually won by the hosts 2-1. However, there were so many controversial incidents during that series – Smith’s ‘brain freeze’ moment, Glenn Maxwell mocking Virat Kohli – that make this follow-up ODI series very interesting.

India’s chance to extend their winning run in ODIs
India under Kohli have been near-ruthless as displayed in the 5-0 demolition of Sri Lanka recently. The hosts will be looking to keep their winning run going although talks of player rotation may be a slight hindrance.

Spin is their biggest strength and even in the absence of Ravichandra Ashwin, it looks formidable. Shikhar Dhawan will not be available owing to his wife’s illness but there is enough depth in their stocks to let the absence not be a problem.

Preparation for the Ashes?
Not the ideal way to prepare for Ashes but the Aussie stars will have to make do with this series as a launch pad. Injuries are a huge worry for the visitors too with Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc ruled out for the entire series. Aaron Finch also joined the injury table for the first three matches.

Smith will monitor the fitness of his key players and rotation will be the buzz word for his pacers. Pat Cummins will play in most of the matches to build up his fitness for the Ashes but others will be rotated around.

Key players and statistics
Australia have won 72 matches in total while losing just 41 in 123 matches played by these two sides so far. In India, the results are a lot closer with Australia having won 25 and lost 21 of the 51 matches played. That includes a 3-2 win for India in the 2013 series.

Recent form though, is in favour of India. The hosts have won eight of their last nine ODIs including six straight wins in the last six matches. Australia have four wins, four losses and two no-results in the ten matches played this year.

No wonder then that India start as heavy favourites at odds of $1.67 (William Hill). The visitors are primed to upset the hosts at odds of $2.25 (Ladbrokes) but that looks a tougher proposition for now.

TIP: Australia to win – $2.25 at Ladbrokes

When it comes to individual players, Kohli at odds of $3.75 (bet365) looks a good pick to be the top batsman for India. For the Aussies, Smith at odds of $1.83 (Ladbrokes) looks a prudent pick to score more than 32.5 runs.

TIP: Smith to score more than 32.5 runs – $1.83 at Ladbrokes
