2016 PGA: U.S. Open Golf Preview & Betting Tips

The famous Oakmont country club will host the 116th U.S Open. This course has a rich history of hosting the Open and this will actually be the 9th time Oakmont has hosted the U.S. Open. The most recent time was back in 2007. The year Angel Cabrera won with a score of +5 (one shot clear of Tiger Woods). Each and every time Oakmont hosts the U.S. Open it produces a big name champion. Previous Champions include Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller and Ernie Els.

The course is approximately 7230 yards long and plays as a Par 70. It’s a classic links-style course that can play very long. Players will have to navigate over 200 bunkers including the trade mark “Church Pew Bunkers” on holes 3 and 4. There are plenty of blind tee shots and lightning quick greens but the biggest problem for golfers will be dealing with the rough. In fact, players complained to the USGA yesterday and the USGA responded by asking Oakmont country club to cut the second cut of rough from 6 inches back to 4 inches.

On Monday, golfer Justin Thomas posted video on Instagram where he dropped a ball into the rough, only to watch it disappear.

After four rounds at the terrifying Oakmont golf course the cream will rise to the top. The winner will need every golf shot in the book and the ability to putt on extremely fast greens. In my mind it really is a two horse race. Let’s take a look at two of the tournament favourites.

Jason Day

The world number 1. Is playing unbelievable golf. So far he has 3 wins in 11 events including 6 top 10’s and has already made over $5.5 million in 2016. Jason Day has the perfect golf game for U.S Open conditions. The harder the course, the better Day plays. He is the best putter on tour (ranked 1 in strokes gained putting) and this is his tournament to loose.

Tip: Jason Day to win outright – $7.50

Jordan Spieth

We all saw his meltdown at the Masters and many thought that it would haunt him for a long time. However, Spieth bounced straight back for his maiden home state victory at the Dean & Deluca Invitational. Spieth has such a great demeanour for golf and he will handle these greens. He hates being the number 2 ranked golfer in the world and it wouldn’t surprise me if it came down to Spieth and Day in the final round.

Tip: Jordan Spieth to win outright – $9.00
