Everyone will be quick to jump on Phil considering he finished the final round of the Wells Fargo with a six under 66. However, TPC Sawgrass has not been kind to Phil in recent years. He has missed the cut his last three starts. Patrick Reed played well here last year with a T24 and has been really consistent this season with 8 out of 14 Top 10’s. This is a Pete Dye designed course just like the Shell Houston Open where Reed finished in 10th place.

Billy Horschel vs Louis Oosthuizen

Billy Horschel is tracking nicely in this tournament. He finished T26 in 2014 and even better T13 last year. His Par 4 scoring average is better than Oosthuizen’s 4.01(ranked 36th) vs 4.11(ranked 182nd). Oosthuizen has struggled at The Players in recent years. He finished T69th last year and missed the cut in 2014. He also missed the cut in the Shell Houston Open which is a course that can correlate to this one.

Dustin Johnson vs Branden Grace

I don’t think this course sets up well for either player but I also don’t think Dustin Johnson will even make it to the weekend. Johnson has finished T59 and T69 the last two years while Grace finished T42 and T48. Grace also has better driving accuracy 57.22% vs 54.55%. Greens in Regulation also goes to Grace 69.25% vs 66.49%. Another big factor is the Thursday tee times and groupings. Johnson is teeing off very late Thursday(1:58pm) with Bubba Watson and Rory McIlroy. This is not a good combination and I can see an opening round in the high 70’s or even worse for Johnson. Grace gets the nice 8:43am Thursday tee time.

Sergio Garcia vs Bubba Watson

Both players had some time off after the Masters after finishing in similar positons 34th and 37th. The Players Championship has been an “Oh so close” story for Sergio Garcia. In the last three years he has finished 8th,3rd and 2nd last year in a playoff. It clearly suits his eye and he is very comfortable there. Bubba Watson is terrible at TPC Sawgrass. In his last three starts he has finished 37th,48th and 42nd. Bubba like Johnson might have a free weekend on the cards.

Hideki Matsuyama vs Henrik Stenson

This is a great match up and they are very evenly matched. They both finished at 6 under here last year T17th. Stenson is more accurate off the tee 69.71% vs 61.39% and greens in regulation is very close Stenson 70.56% vs Hideki 70.12%. Stenson also has Hideki covered in strokes gained tee to green 1.935 vs 1.836. All-round rankings is Stenson 7th vs Hideki 17th. I’m going with the Swed.
