2017 Chester Manifold Stakes Betting Tips

The Listed Chester Manifold Stakes is the feature race on the card at Flemington this weekend in what looks to be a very competitive affair.

11 runners are set to line up over the 1400m with more than half of the field under double figure odds.

There really doesn’t look to be a great deal of tempo in the race and Top Me Up should get a relatively easy time of it out front. Airalign has led in previous campaigns but has been ridden with cover so far this prep. I think with the lack of tempo and the good barrier he’ll settle right on the speed, which could leave Lord Aspen and Hell On Earth to settle forward of midfield.

Grande Rosso and Divine Mr Artie should get a nice run in midfield, while Tonopah, Sold For Song, Zebrinz, Zupacharged and Tuff Host typically race near the back of the field.

Considering the moderate tempo predicted I’m pretty keen to be on Lord Aspen here, who won over this track and distance during the Spring Carnival. His record over this distance is phenomenal and his record at the track is also very good, so with the sit on the leaders’ heels and the step back up to 1400m I think he’ll be hard to beat at a good price.

Airalign has been flying in easier races so far this prep but I think he can make the step up to this grade now on the back of his last start win. His second up run is always the best of his preparation and he tends to drop off a touch when third up, but I’m prepared to have something on him as I think he is a better horse this prep.

Grande Rosso continues to race well this prep after finishing 2nd to Lucky Liberty in the Christmas Stakes at Caulfield last start. From the barrier he’ll have to drop and settle worse than midfield and this may be a little stronger than what he’s faced recently, but I still expect him to be thereabouts in the finish.

The rise to 1400m could also help Divine Mr Artie at this stage of the prep after he failed last start over 1200m as favourite in the Standish Handicap. His first up win was extremely impressive but on the back of last start it’s hard for me to put him on top here so I’ll be risking him despite the fact he’s been backed into $4 favourite.

The interesting runner is the Queenslander Sold For Song who resumed with a good run to finish 2nd to Kinsachi at Eagle Farm. That form looks good given it was Kinsachi’s third straight win, and given the way Sold For Song finished off the race he should really appreciate the extra 200m here. Barrier 1 could be detrimental, however, as he tends to get back in his races, so he’ll need a bit of luck at the top of the straight.

Top Me Up comes off a very strong 4L win under top weight at Sandown last start. He’ll appreciate the soft lead and the drop to 54kg and could run a cheeky race, but this is stronger and he’s so far failed at Flemington.

Sticking with Lord Aspen here, but worth having a saver on Airalign in a competitive race.
