England v South Africa Second Test Betting Tips

Joe Root’s captaincy stint started with a bang as England defeated South Africa comprehensively at the Lord’s to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. The teams now move to Trent Bridge, Nottingham where the Second Test would be played from July 14 – 18.

For Root and England, it was almost a dream debut. Batting came under pressure in the first innings on the first day but lady luck smiled broadly on Root and the hosts who went on to post a match-winning huge score.

Though the opening slot is still a worry, there were enough signs in the second innings that Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings could be their long-term answer. Gary Ballance was the lone disappointment although he too showed glimpses of his domestic form.

The key for Root was Moeen Ali both with the bat and ball – stretching the score in first innings and then weaving a web with his innocuous spin. His impact was such that England’s core match-winners – Ben Stokes, James Anderson and Jonny Bairstow – had very little to do.

South Africa on the other hand have been going through a lot of doldrums. Faf du Plessis returns to take charge and the team will hope for some inspired leadership from the middle-order batsman. Lack of runs from the top order has been their bane although bowling held its head high with impressive performances.

Talking about bowling, the impressive Kagiso Rabada will miss the match due to suspension which robs the Proteas of a proven match-winner. Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock continue to shepherd the middle and lower order but Faf would want more from his top order.

Starting XIs
England will use the same group of 12 players which means it will be a toss-up between Liam Dawson and seamer Toby Roland-Jones. The left-arm spinner was steady and influential at Lord’s and that may sway the decision towards retaining him.

Faf will replace the struggling JP Duminy while Duanne Oliver for Rabada will be a like-for-like replacement. There is a thought to include all-rounder Chris Morris in place of Theunis de Bruyn.

England and Nottingham have a love affair as the hosts are on a seven-match unbeaten streak, that includes six wins. Overall, they have a 4-2 record against South Africa in eight matches at Nottingham.

England after their comprehensive win start as heavy favourites. Odds of $1.62 (William Hill) make picking England to be winners, a prudent bet.

TIP: England to win – $1.62 at William Hill

There is so much riding on Faf the captain but there is an equally important role for Faf the batsman. Lack of runs in the first innings has been their undoing and Faf should be the answer to those travails. Back Du Plessis to be the top South African batsman in the first innings at odds of $5 (Ladbrokes).

TIP: Faf Du Plessis top South African batsman 1st Innings – $5 at Ladbrokes

Root’s form with the bat is crucial for England and at odds of $3.75 (Ladbrokes), the England captain is a good pick to be the hosts’ best batsman.

TIP: Joe Root top English batsman 1st Innings – $3.75 at Ladbrokes
