Queensland Oaks 2017
The Group 1 Queensland Oaks for the three-year-old fillies over 2200m is the feature race in Australia this weekend.

The race has been shifted from Eagle Farm (normally run over 2400m) to Doomben due to the state of the Eagle Farm track, but we’ve still got a capacity field of 16 set to line up.

There could be a decent fight for the lead here with Dawn Wall, Cross Stitch, Invincibella, Isn’t She Elegant, Sharp Speedo, Kirini and Baysa all capable of going forward. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see the field strung out a bit during the run, which should set it up for those running on.

I really only think there’s four genuine winning chances here and it’s the top four in the market.

I’m pretty happy to stick with Group 1 South Australian Oaks winner Egg Tart for Chris Waller and Kerrin McEvoy. Her win in the Oaks was hugely impressive, settling almost last in the field (and still last on the turn) before weaving her way through traffic in the straight to get up in the final strides. Out of all the fancied runners here she draws the best in barrier 10. I think we’ll see her settle worse than midfield and for me she is clearly the one to beat at the $3.50 mark.

The value in the race could be her stablemate Dawn Wall for Hugh Bowman. This filly as won four of her six races – her two losses came when she was on debut and then when she struck a heavy track two starts ago. It is wise to forgive her start on the heavy track and she proved that last start with a dominant win in the Gold Coast Bracelet over 1800m. She draws very poorly in barrier 16 but I’d expect them to roll forward with her based on how we saw her race last start. At $7.50 I’ll be backing her as well as Egg Tart.

She draws barrier 11 here, so she’ll settle worse than midfield and hope for some cover and some luck. I think Egg tart has her measure but there’s no doubting Kenedna will be somewhere around the mark, and if the others strike trouble, she’s good enough to win.

The fourth runner that should be included is Ana Royale, who stepped up to 2500m last start and absolutely bolted in. She ran 3rd to Egg tart and Kenedna in the SA Oaks, beaten 0.6L and her run was absolutely enormous. I don’t like the fact she’s 2500m back to 2200m but their hand was forced, and the SA Oaks was over 2000m so it shouldn’t be that much of an issue. She will have to come from well back again, but she’s got the class to win this.

I’m prepared to take on Oklahoma Girl here who is lengths better on a wet track. She finished 2nd by a nose to Kenedna last start but that was on a heavy track. If we look at run two starts ago on the Good track, she wasn’t as effective as she had been in the wet.

With the Waller stable here, backing Egg Tart hard with something on Dawn Wall too.
