Doomben 10,000
The Group 1 Doomben 10,000 is the first Group 1 of the Brisbane Winter Carnival and headlines the 8 race card at Doomben this weekend.

The track is currently rated a Soft 6 after rain throughout the week and with more rain predicted on Saturday I doubt we’ll see that improve.

There looks to be no shortage of speed here, in fact there looks to be a real speed battle up front. Expect to see Fell Swoop and Takedown go forward from their wide gates, while Redzel led last start and can do so again from the good draw. Upstart Pride is another that leads in his races, and Russian Revolution, Music Magnate, In Her Time and The Monstar all tend to race on speed.

I think the horses most suited by that speed will be Russian Revolution and Derryn, and if Music Magnate takes a sit from barrier 7 he should get a lovely run.

The horse to beat is Russian Revolution and while the hot speed should help him settle in the run, the $3 is as low as I’d want to go. He did plenty wrong before his win in the Group 1 The Galaxy first up, and nothing went right for him in the TJ Smith last start. He gets a little gear change today with the crossover noseband going on and if he can settle behind the speed he should be able to run them down. The gate at least allows him to do that today, and his trial leading into this was very nice.

The biggest danger to the Russian could be his stablemate Redzel and it could well be a Team Snowden quinella. Redzel ran 2nd to Russian Revolution by 0.2L in The Galaxy and he gets a 2kg weight swing here so could well turn the tables. Since The Galaxy he has won the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes and he should be running well in this. The main concern is obviously the pressure up front.

I think the best value in the race is clearly Derryn, who will settle back in the field and is perfectly suited by the tempo expected. His win last start in the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint was solid and the time they ran was good for 1200m on a Soft 7. The Soft track here really enhances his chances and he’ll get a terrific run from barrier 6. $14 looks very appealing.

Music Magnate won this race last year and comes into this in good shape. The drier the track the better for him but provided it isn’t heavy, he should be pretty well suited here. Barrier 7 should allow him to sit behind the speed but he won’t be too far away. He was good when winning the Group 2 Victory Stakes last time we saw him and it would be no surprise to see him win this again.

Fell Swoop will run his usual honest race and don’t discount In Her Time who comes into this first up.
