CrownBet payout early on Fyfe to win Brownlow

And the winner of the 2015 Brownlow Medal is…Nat Fyfe!

Well, that’s the opinion of leading Australian sportsbook Crownbet who during the week paid out all single bets placed before May 22 on Fyfe to win the 2015 Brownlow Medal.

Fyfe has enjoyed a remarkable start to the AFL season. Through eight rounds, Fyfe had polled 68 of a possible 80 votes in the AFL Coaches Association Player of the Year Award to be 22 votes ahead of his nearest rival.

It’s possible that Fyfe has polled votes in every game so far this season and a maximum three votes in as many as seven matches.

“We believe Fyfe is a long way in front of the pack, and given the form he’s in, will continue to poll votes,” CrownBet’s CEO Matt Tripp said.

“He’s had an unbelievable start to the season and it seems a formality that we’d be paying out on him in September anyway, so punters might as well enjoy their cash now.”

“Punters can reinvest on Fyfe if they wish, or can take their money. It’s completely up to them. The cash is in their accounts.”

So why would CrownBet pay out a six-figure sum to its customers so far before the finish line, especially given the poor history of Fyfe with suspensions?

Rather than have punters’ funds tied up for months in a market that appears inevitable, CrownBet would rather allow them to reinvest those funds. The early payout also brings some handy media publicity as well!

Of course what many savvy punters did was simply reinvest those funds straight back into Fyfe to win the Brownlow! Nothing wrong with that and perhaps the price of $2.25 before the start of Round 9 still offers some value.

The move of CrownBet is expected to be followed by Sportsbet who are perhaps even holding more money on the result.

With 15 rounds to go, time will tell if the Fyfe payout was premature or if he could possibly poll the most votes in the history of the Brownlow medal.
