Cricket Betting: South Africa vs India ODI Series Preview

January 31, 2018 by Posted in Cricket Tips

What a Test series, we had! The two top-ranked Test nations – South Africa and India – dished out one of the best series in recent history, which was won 2-1 by the hosts.

The stage is now set for the six-match ODI series between the sides – again the top ranked nations! There is a lot at stake for both teams which makes the series, starting with the first ODI on February 1st, another intriguing prospect.

South Africa – a chance to keep winning

The hosts have a terrific ODI line-up, even without AB de Villiers, who is injured for the first three matches. The likes of Hashim Amla, Quniton de Kock, and Faf du Plessis make them one of the strongest batting units going around.

Then, the likes of David Miller and Chris Morris add power and muscle to their middle-order.
With the ball, the presence of Kagiso Rabada is a huge positive while Imran Tahir, Morris, and Lungi Ndidi add variety. There is so much on offer from this side that should make them favourites to win the series.

India – a chance to rewrite history

India are one of the toughest ODI units going around and that’s largely because of their batting excellence. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni bring a lot of aggression and consistency to this side.

With the ball, a lot will depend on the duo of Bhuvneswar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah. The advantage of having them is that they offer variety and control at either end of the innings. Add the variety offered by the wrist-spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav – you have a perfect ODI unit that can win in these conditions.

South Africa played 77 ODIs against India so far, winning 45 and losing just 29. At home, the Proteas have a 21-5 head-to-head record in 28 ODIs.

South Africa have never lost a home ODI series to India. They have won the last three series played between these two sides.

India need to win the series by 4-2 or better, to displace South Africa at the top of the rankings. They will slip into third place, should they lose by 5-1 or worse. A draw in the series is enough for South Africa to retain their top ranking.

Key players

He may have had a Test series to forget, but De Kock is one of the most destructive openers in ODI cricket. Against India, he has an average of 72 across ten ODIs, with five centuries and one fifty. He should enjoy the change of format!

For India, the onus of big scores lies on their captain Kohli. The run-machine has a career average of 55.74 in ODIs, but that comes down to 44.43 when he faces South Africa. Will he fire this time?

South Africa remain favourites for a series win at odds of $2 (Ladbrokes) while India are primed at odds of $3.50 (Ladbrokes). Back the hosts to win the series.

TIP: South Africa to win series – $2 at Ladbrokes

De Kock at odds of $3.20 (bet365) is a good bet to be the best batsman for South Africa while Kohli at odds of $2.87 (Sportsbet) is a good pick for the visitors.

TIP: Kohli to be top Indian batsman – $2.87 at Sportsbet
