Not often do you see the South African team hustled at home but England have managed to do just that. AB de Villiers has replaced Hashim Amla as skipper and the hosts will go into the third Test match with more of their usual aggression. This exciting match gets underway at the Wanderers, Johannesburg on Thursday, January 14th.

If it is a chance for the hosts to continue building up on the good form they found in the second Test, for the visitors it is a chance to seal the series. England would want to continue putting the home team under pressure and not give a toehold for the Proteas.

The Second Test at Newlands finished a draw but has given the hosts much needed confidence. The runs that dried up from their best players Amla and de Villiers came back, much to the pleasure of the hosts. Also adding to the comfort factor is the aggressive century of Temba Bavuma who has shown a glimpse of his potential.

Generally, a change of guard in the midst of an important series is considered a sign of weakness. However, in South Africa’s case, this could turn out to be an important move. Amla wasn’t able to stamp his authority or be pro-active with his captaincy decisions. De Villiers could turn out to be the ideal replacement for the Proteas as they seek an important win.

But, the absence of Dale Steyn is a big blow to the hosts’ aspirations. Kagiso Rabada performed admirably in the second Test and could turn out to be vital once again. Chris Morris was also steady without being spectacular and may get another chance to showcase his abilities.

England were harried in their second innings but otherwise were solid throughout. The whirlwind double century by Ben Stokes in the first innings shocked South Africa into submission till Amla and De Villiers pulled them out with great performances.

England would be happy that they are leading in the series although Alastair Cook and Joe Root are yet to make a significant contribution. Ditto with James Anderson with the ball who is yet to showcase his skills. Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali are chipping with regular contributions and should be confident of their performances going into this match. The only concern, though, for Cook is the catching form with many vital catches going down.

There is buzz in the home camp about getting into momentum and playing with more aggression – now with De Villiers at the helm. But, problems still persist for the home side who would have loved to have Steyn for the game. England on the other hand will be as confident as they were at Newlands.

It is a risky proposition, but back South Africa to win the test at odds of 2.75 (William Hill). Root has looked really good without a big score yet in the series and this could be his best chance. Back him at odds of 4.0 (William Hill) to be the visitors’ best batsman.
