Cricket Betting: South Africa vs Australia 3rd Test Preview

March 21, 2018 by Posted in Cricket Tips

If you are rooting for a perfect recipe in the lead up to the 3rd Test between South Africa and Australia, you certainly got it! Not only are we heading into the match with scores level at 1-1, we also have witnessed a week of sensational off-field activities that culminated in South Africa ‘gaining’ Kagiso Rabada’s presence for the Test.

No one’s complaining, though, as we have on our hands one of the most competitive series between two of the most competitive rivals. The third Test at Newlands in Cape Town from Thursday (March 22nd) promises to be one of the most fascinating encounters!

South Africa – buoyed by Rabada’s presence!

After a comprehensive loss in the first Test, South Africa were expected to hit back hard. They did exactly that in Port Elizabeth, winning the match by six-wickets and levelling the series. It was a match that was won on the back of Rabada’s exceptional bowling (5 for 96 and 6 for 54) although AB de Villiers (126 not out) was the architect in the first innings with the bat.
A notable change for the Proteas is the way their middle and lower order stood up to be counted against the reverse swing of Mitchell Starc. Those contributions were vital in the final analysis as a big first innings lead set the hosts on the winning path. Now, buoyed by Rabada’s availability for the Third Test, South Africa will hope to make the best of their favourites tag.

Australia – glaring inconsistencies

Australia will rue the fact that they gave it away when South Africa were there for the taking in the second Test. Their performances with the bat, especially, were inconsistent enough to give a window of opportunity for the Proteas which they accepted with glee.
With the ball too, the inability of Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins to recreate their Ashes form is hurting them badly. To make matters worse, Mitchell Starc’s presence in the Cape Town Test is a question mark, because of his calf injury. If he does pull out, it could be a big blow to their hopes of pulling ahead in the series.

South Africa have been excellent in their last 15 Tests in Cape Town, winning 11 and losing just once while drawing the remaining three. Australia handed the Proteas that lone loss, in 2014, and have won ten out of the 13 Tests they played here, losing the remaining three.

Key players

There is so much of limelight on Rabada, but South Africa know that it needs De Villiers to fire with the bat. When in full flow, he is one of the best batsmen to watch and one of the toughest to stop. Can he pinch the Aussies once again? Pat Cummins has shown glimpses of his potential and was unlucky to have not taken more wickets in the series. With question marks over the availability of Starc, he could be a crucial cog in Smith’s plans.

Philander could be the best bowler for South Africa in the first innings – odds offered are $3.75 (Ladbrokes).

TIP: Philander most SA wickets first innings – $3.75 at Ladbrokes

With the bat, it has to be De Villiers, who can be their best batsman in the first innings. The odds offered are $3.75 (Sportsbet).

TIP: de Viliers to be the top South African batsman in the first innings – $3.75 at Sportsbet
