Cricket Betting: New Zealand vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test Preview

New Zealand Sri Lanka Test seriesNew Zealand will look to complete a clean sweep as Sri Lanka try to upset the apple cart in the second and final Test match to be played at Seddon Park in Hamilton from Friday, December 18.

The hosts hold a 1-0 lead after a 122-run victory in the first test at Dunedin. Brendon McCullum showed his daring streak as a captain by declaring in the second innings with so much time in hand. It proved to be a boon for the home bowlers as they braved challenging weather conditions, and a determined opposition, to emerge victorious.

Conditions will prove to be as challenging in Hamilton for McCullum and his team. Mark Craig could push for a place but it would be harsh to drop either Doug Bracewell who provided control or Neil Wagner who provided aggression. This could mean that Mitchell Santner would continue to be the lone slow bowler.

For the visitors, it was a case of an inexperienced batting unit against the accomplished bowling of the hosts. Dinesh Chandimal and Dimuth Karunaratne only looked capable of thwarting the Kiwis while captain Angelo Mathews disappointed. Chandimal may give up gloves in favor of Kaushal Silva who previously opened for the islanders.

Their bowling attack didn’t fare any better either, especially on the opening day at Dunedin. The Kiwis went at almost five runs an over which proved to be the real difference in the final analysis, saving them much needed time. Having two spinners is a luxury in these conditions but will Mathews be daring enough to replace Milinda Siriwardna with a batsman?

This is the turf where Daniel Vettori plied his trade and was known to take spin during his heyday. This time around, though, it could surprise the Lankans as there is far more grass cover than normal. Mathews can only hope that his faster bowlers give him better control than in the first Test match.

The markets aren’t offering much for a Kiwi win but draw at odds of $4.15 at Sportsbet is an interesting option to watch out for. Kane Williamson had a quiet Test match compared to his recent lofty standards and could be itching for more runs. Back him at odds of $4.33 at Sportsbet to score a ton in the 1st innings. For Sri Lanka, the onus will be on Chandimal and at odds of $2.70 at Sportsbet back him to score a fifty in the 1st innings.

Current form and history mean that odds are stacked heavily against Sri Lanka who are still to get their footing with their new batting line up. It would need a humongous effort from them to pull a draw, let alone win.
