Australia’s summer didn’t get off to a great start in Perth against South Africa. Even a Dale Steyn injury couldn’t help the Aussies, who tapped out for a tame loss. The visitors now have a chance to wrap up the series with a win in the Second Test at Hobart starting on 12th November. With rain predicted on the first four days, the hosts have an uphill battle to stay relevant in the series.

The Kangaroos started well in Perth but wilted under relentless pressure from the Proteas. In hindsight, their collapse on the second day was the real cause for their downfall, although they would be worried about their bowling performance in second innings. To make matters worse, Peter Siddle is ruled out and there are question marks hanging over Mitchell Starc.

Although Starc might play, one more player definitely out of contention is Shaun Marsh, meaning Joe Burns slated to open the innings. There are rumours that Callum Ferguson may also play irrespective of how good the hamstring of Adam Voges is. David Warner looked the only comfortable batter and will continue to be their main hope although Steve Smith would like to get back his thirst for runs.

For the South Africans, it was a Test that went completely to plan. Barring their discomfort on the first day, the character and skill of this side to wriggle out of difficult situations came to the fore. And to do so without one of their key players would have given them lot of confidence going to Hobart.

Kagiso Rabada looked the real deal with his ability to handle the swing – both conventional and reverse. With the bat, there were contributions all across, although Hashim Amla and Stephen Cook missed out. The overcast conditions may suit them at the moment, which is ominous news for the hosts.

With so much rain predicted, there is no surprise that the Test ending in a draw is one of the most sought-after punts.

TIP: Draw – $1.71 at Sportsbet

Usman Khawaja showed lot of fight and grit in the second innings at Perth and at odds of 2.5 (Ladbrokes) looks a worthy punt to back scoring a half-century in the first innings.

TIP: Usman Khawaja to score 50 (1st Innings) – $2.37 at Sportsbet

For the first time since 1988, Australia started their summer with a loss. Can they bounce back from the Perth mauling?
