Rivalries in Cricket goes beyond boundaries. If you doubt it, just ask Australia and New Zealand who will battle it out for the Chappell-Hadlee trophy over a three-match ODI series. When the two teams take the field on Sunday December 4 in Sydney for the first match, the formalities will become hostilities.

Australia come into the series with an air of uncertainty around their squad. Across formats and across continents, they have seen their fortunes plummet. A Test series whitewash in Sri Lanka, a ODI series whitewash in South Africa and loss in the first two Tests against South Africa at home – the ignominy of the Kangaroos is a huge concern for Darren Lehmann and Steven Smith.

The last win for Australia in an ODI game came way back in September against Ireland. Despite such form, Australia still continue to top the ODI rankings. With the likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood and Pat Cummins coming back into the squad, Smith would hope for a change of fortunes.

The Kiwis had a forgettable tour of India too where they were whitewashed in the Test series. Though they lost the ODI series 3-2, they looked in much better control. Now back in familiar terrains, the Kiwis seem to have settled back into their groove. And to add to that, this is a format they relish and are more dangerous in too!

New Zealand also have to grapple with injury concerns. Ross Taylor has been left home to take care of his eye surgery. While the likes of Adam Milne, Mitchell McClenaghan and Corey Anderson are missing due to injury. Colin de Grandhomme has had a fantastic international debut against Pakistan and could play a vital role in this series.

Even their recent poor form didn’t seem to deter the odds market which heavily favors Australia. Odds of 1.42 on a home win are too short compared to odds of 2.89 (sportsbet) on a Kiwi win. The Kiwis could still spring a surprise and win the first match.

TIP: New Zealand to Win – $2.89 at Sportsbet

Smith has seen his stock fall rapidly in the wake of the recent defeats and this series could prove crucial for his future. Back him to be the best Aussie batsman in the first match, at odds of 4.5.

TIP: Steve Smith Most Runs, Australia – $4.50 at Spotsbet
