Australia-vs-Sri-Lanka-Test

Sri Lanka were able to pull off a massive upset in the first Test at Kandy and have taken a surprise lead in the three-Test series. The hosts now have a golden chance of sealing the series at Galle with the second Test beginning on Thursday, August 4th.

Angelo Mathews was under severe pressure before the first Test due to the recent poor performances he had for his side. However, their star spinner Rangana Herath did the ultimate favor by leading the inexperienced bowling attack with nine wickets. The Aussies had no answer to either him or the debutant wrist spin of Lakshan Sandakan who bagged seven.

Batting is still a concern although the youngster Kusal Mendis showed glimpses of his potential with a match-winning effort at Kandy. The middle order still looks vulnerable and the experienced Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal are expected to come up with improved efforts.

For the Aussies, it is back to square one as their task has become a lot harder. Their batsmen weren’t able to gain any serious momentum and it was the undoing for Steve Smith’s men with no one leading from the front. Joe Burns, Mitchell Marsh and Smith all looked to be settled at the crease before throwing it away and they will need to address this in Galle.

The loss of Steve O’Keefe to an injury is a big blow to the Aussies who have flown in Jon Holland as a replacement. The left-arm spinner should start the match but Smith will expect more from his lead spinner Nathan Lyon. Mitchell Starc led the attack with his pace at Kandy and will once again be vital for the Aussies’ plans.

David Warner was disappointing in the first Test scoring just one run in two innings but he will bounce back as he continues his return from injury. His runs at the top have always been crucial for the comfort of their middle order. At odds of $4.00 with William Hill, we are backing the dashing opener can be their top batsman in the 1st innings. Chandimal could be vital for the hosts and at odds of $4.50 with William Hill, we are predicting him to be their best batsmen in the opening innings. We are also expecting an improved performance from Nathan Lyon and back him at odds of $3.50 with William Hill to do the star turn with the ball in the first innings.

If anything Galle will provide more assistance to the hosts’ spinners with the track expected to take turn from day one. Darren Lehmann’s not complaining but his side has a gigantic task at hand of staying alive in the series.
