Copa America: Chile vs PeruCopa America edges closer to finding the new champion as the last standing four nations start their pursuit of reaching the final. The first semi-final features host nation Chile and Peru.

The two nations form one of South American football’s biggest rivals. What adds to the fierce rivalry is the status of Chile defender Gonzalo Jara who has been suspended for three games – effectively ruling him out of the remainder of the Copa America tournament.

The incident from the quarter-final involved Jara and Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani. Jara appeared to prod Cavani in the backside but Cavani got sent off for his reaction.

Cavani raised his hand to Jara’s face and was sent off while Jara got away scot free. But, the incident was reviewed post-match and the sword of suspension was swung on Jara.

Despite the controversy, the tournament hosts overcame Uruguay 1-0 in the quarter-final.

Chile comes into the last four on the back of a free-scoring run in the tournament. They have scored 11 times in the first four matches of this Copa America which is their highest tally since 1967. The home supporters expect to see that this converts into a first Copa America win.

The two nations share a border and the matches between them, ‘Clasico del Pacifico’, are so fierce that even their friendly games aren’t friendly. In their last friendly, Peru finished the game with 10 men.

Peru are a two-time champion and come into the semi-final the back of a 3-1 win over Bolivia. Their star striker Paolo Guerrero struck a hat-trick and would be brimming with confidence.

The progress of Peru, masterminded by their coach Ricardo Gareca, is the surprise of the tournament. And, the visitors will have enough motivation to put it past their hosts.

Their long-standing rivalry goes into overdrive with one of the most important games for both the teams. It won’t be for the soft natured and don’t be surprised if there are red cards in the game.

It is very tempting to put your money on Chile ($1.50 at CrownBet) but there is not much value in that. Peru are the underdog for the match and at odds of $7.00 at CrownBet, the win for Peru looks like a great value play.
