Caulfield Racing: 2017 Underwood Stakes Betting Tips

Caulfield Race 7 – Hyland Race Colours Underwood Stakes 1800m – Group 1

The Group 1 Underwood Stakes is the feature race on the card at Caulfield this Sunday with a field of eight runners set to line up over the 1800m.

Tactics and tempo will be all the difference here with the small field. James Cummings has said he’d like Hartnell ridden a touch quieter today but I can’t see that happening. The tempo of this race looks fairly slow on paper, so from barrier 8 I’d expect Hartnell to roll forward and either lead or sit outside Gailo Chop, perhaps. Black Heart Bart and Samovare may sit third and fourth in the run, with He’s Our Rokkii and Single Gaze next, and Inference and Bonneval at the rear of the field.

I think this is a two-horse race between Hartnell and Bonneval, and with what I expect to be a slow tempo, I think that tilts things slightly in favour of the Godolphin horse. He was slightly disappointing on face value last start in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m), but the early tempo of that race set it up for a backmarker. Humidor was that backmarker, sweeping home from last, while Hartnell stuck on bravely for 2nd.

Bonneval, on the other hand, resumed over 1600m at Moonee Valley in the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes. It was a similar story in that race in terms of the tempo being hot, due to the riderless horse forcing the field to go faster than they would have liked. Bonneval was the beneficiary of that hot speed, coming from worse-than-midfield to storm home over the top to win. Abbey Marie came with Bonneval from the back of the field to run 2nd, and that form is slightly questionable after Abbey Marie ran 5th at her next start.

This is where I think the tempo today will play a big part. Hartnell won’t have to go as fast as he did last start and he won’t have to do as much work as he did early in the race, while Bonneval won’t get as hot a tempo to set it up for her coming from the back. If they run along slowly, we may see Hartnell return to his best and dominate the race from the front like he did first up in the PB Lawrence Stakes.

Outside of those two, Black Heart Bart will be competitive, but I am keen to take him on today. He won this race last year by 2.5L, but I actually think Hartnell and Bonneval are better horses over 1800m. Bart started $2.20 favourite last year so was entitled to win well, and the horse he beat was He Or She, so the field wasn’t as strong as it is this year, despite the low numbers today.

Samovare is a highly talented mare that I have a lot of time for, and her run last weekend over 2000m was outstanding. The form behind Harlem looks strong, and she comes into this race on the quick back-up. She’s being aimed at a Caulfield Cup, and think she has the class to be competitive here, so with Damian Lane booked to ride she is definitely a place chance at good odds.

Hartnell on top for me; I’ll be using Ladbrokes to get around $2.70, and I’ll be saving on Bonneval at $4.60.
