Big Bash League Renegades

As part of our Big Bash League (BBL05) Team preview series, we looked at Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Stars in our first article. This time, we look forward to the fortunes of Melbourne Renegades, Sydney Sixers and Adelaide Strikers.

Melbourne Renegades

Any team which boasts Chris Gayle in its ranks should be one of the most entertaining. And if he has Aaron Finch as his opening partner, then it surely must be one of the most destructive partnerships in T20 cricket. The Renegades also have Cameron White in their ranks after the explosive batsman was signed from rivals Melbourne Stars.

The loss of Fawad Ahmed should be offset by the capture of Xavier Doherty from Hurricanes. With the exception of reaching the semi-finals in the second edition, the Renegades have little to show for their BBL efforts so far and would be eager to set the record straight.

David Saker is the new head coach and will be under pressure to deliver, however their fortunes will depend a lot on Chris Gayle.

Player to watch: Aaron Finch
X factor: Chris Gayle
Prediction: Semi-finals
Odds: $6 (Sportsbet)

Sydney Sixers

The winner of inaugural BBL and last season finalists, the Sydney Sixers come closest to the Scorchers in terms of previous BBL success. They seem determined to compensate for last year’s loss. The Sixers have strengthened their bowling attack with the capture of Jackson Bird and Johan Botha to offset the retirement of Brett Lee.

Greg Shipperd replaces Trevor Bayliss as the coach and his task is completely cut out. Mitchell Starc will be unavailable while the presence of Steven Smith and Josh Hazlewood will also be limited due to international commitments.

The core group has been together for some time now and this should give the Sixers an extra edge. The signing of Botha could turn out to be a shrewd piece of business.

Player to watch: Johan Botha
X factor: Michael Lumb
Prediction: Semi-finals
Odds: $7.50 (Sportsbet)

Adelaide Strikers

Last season’s semi-finalists, the Strikers will try to push for bigger honours under Jason Gillespie this season. Does the team have it in them to push the limits?

Mahela Jayawardene is signed as an overseas player replacing Kieron Pollard. The Sri Lankan veteran may not be a like-for-like replacement but has the experience of playing in T20 leagues around the world. The experience of Jayawardene and Brad Hodge should prove vital for the Strikers.

Bowling will depend on Ben Laughlin and overseas import Adil Rashid, with the England spinner set to feature only in a portion of the season. This provides a chance to Jon Holland but will the strike force be good enough?

Player to watch: Mahela Jayawardene
X factor: Travis Head
Prediction: Close run to semi-finals
Odds: $9 (Sportsbet)
