Big Bash League (BBL05) Semi-Finals Betting Tips

Mike Hussey BBL05After 32 matches of heavy artillery and high adrenaline, Big Bash League Season 5 has reached the semi-final stage. In a year that has seen some great action and close matches, the Adelaide Strikers, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers and Sydney Thunder have reached the semis in that order. With three matches to go for the title, here’s the low-down on the final four as we preview the BBL05 Semi Finals.

Jan 21, 7:40 PM AEDT: Adelaide Strikers vs Sydney Thunder at Adelaide Oval

The Strikers matched their best BBL performance of last season by reaching the semi-finals. They have been the most consistent team of this season having lost only once (to the Thunder, no less). The form of Travis Head has been so brilliant that he’s been called up to the national squad to face India in T20 Internationals following the BBL series. Adil Rashid is fast weaving a reputation of his own as one of the deadliest T20 bowlers in the world. He has taken more wickets (15) than any other player during the season and has been one of the most valuable overseas recruits in the competition.

They have always been the wooden spoon contenders but Thunder this season are a different team. They started well but a flurry of losses saw them relying on the Strikers beating the Renegades in the last match to come through. The presence of Mike Hussey in the middle order over the last few seasons has been hugely important to the Thunder. He continues to defy his age, batting superbly as the second highest run scorer in the league this season. Andre Russell has shred every attack to pieces having scored 175 runs at a strike-rate of 192, while also taking 14 wickets at an average of 17 as the leading all-rounder in the competition.

The Thunder won the regular season clash in a game that saw Russell and Clint McKay restrict Adelaide to a paltry 119 and Jacques Kallis anchoring the chase. Will the Strikers be second time lucky or will the Thunder move on to bigger things? The return of Usman Khawaja and the fitness of Kallis could prove crucial but Adelaide at home are unbeaten so far this season.

Verdict: Back the Thunder at odds of $2.15 at Sportsbet

Jan 22, 7:40 PM AEDT: Melbourne Stars vs Perth Scorchers at MCG

The Stars have been consistent in reaching the semi-finals every year of the Big Bash League, and they’ve done it again in BBL05. However they are yet to reach the final – will that change this year?

When they started the season with back-to-back losses, finals looked a distant dream. The presence of a calm Stephen Fleming as coach seems to have worked wonders but they need more from their star import Kevin Pietersen to move further. The ability of Michael Beer to tie the batsmen down (economy rate of just 6.28) could come crucial in this encounter.

Perth has the enviable record of reaching the finals (and being twice Champion) every season. Their loss to the Stars in the final round has denied them home ground advantage in this semi-final, but the Scorchers are always a team that are competitive. Andrew Tye has been brilliant with the ball and has earned his spot with the national T20 team. His economy rate of 6.79 doesn’t tell the fact that he’s bowled mostly in pressure situations at the death. With the bat though, the veterans Michael Klinger and Adam Voges will be itching to nullify the home advantage of the Stars.
Will their last match have any impact on the semis? Scorchers are a different side in the knock-outs but this could just be the year for Stars.

Verdict: Back the Stars at odds of $1.95 at Sportsbet
