How to bet on Horse Racing

Win – The most popular Horse Racing betting type is the win bet. Bookmakers can offer price boosts on a fixed win bet.
Place – Back a horse to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd with the place bet. Good for backing roughies and in multi-betting.
Each-Way – The each way bet means the horse can either win the race or finish in the top three. This is ideal for a close race in the odds.
Tote betting – Betting on the Tote means you’ll either get the best odds from the Victorian, NSW or QLD tote price. Or you’ll receive the mid tote price, it just depends on the bookmaker.
Quinella – A quinella is a bet type for the first two runners in a race. It can either be boxed with 2+ numbers, but the odds will decrease.
Exacta – The exacta means you must pick the order of the first two runners.
Trifecta – A trifecta means you’ll need to pick the first three horses. It can be boxed (any order) or fixed (exact order) for 3 numbers.
First Four – A first four is for backing the first four finishers in a race.
Quaddie – The quaddie is usually available for the last four races at a certain track. You’ll need to pick each winner in those four races for a successful bet.

Horse Racing betting strategies

Barrier – Generally a closer barrier draw to the rail (Under 10) will benefit the horse as a wider barrier leads to a longer race distance. For example, the current best Melbourne Cup barrier is number 5 and the wider barriers have rarely had a winner.
Distance record– The distance record of a horse is mainly a consideration for longer races. If a horse hasn’t raced at the distance, they’ll likely struggle to finish strongly down the straight. So look for a horse that has run the distance, especially for the Melbourne Cup.
Form – Before betting on a race, read the form guide or read through our Horse Racing betting tips for an overview of the race/s.
Jockey – Betting solely on the jockey can pay dividends. A good jockey can make the difference in a race and it can help you find a winner.
Track Form – Some horses perform better on a track and this is another key betting strategy.
Trainer – Looking at the trainer is a good betting strategy in a maiden race or finding a roughie. At the moment, key trainers such as Chris Waller, Darren Weir, Lloyd Williams and Gia Waterhouse, are best to back their runners as they have a higher overall winning chance.
