Continue readingHow to bet on the AFL
Head to head – The most simple way to bet on the AFL is head to head. Simply back the winner out of the teams playing. This is recommended for backing the underdog at odds over $2 if you think they can cause an upset. It’s also recommended for building multi
Line/Handicap – The line determines the favourite and underdog in an AFL match. The team with a minus (-) line is the favourite and must win by the nominated total of points. The plus (+) line is given to the underdog and they must get within the points or win for a successful bet. Betting on the line is similar to betting on head to head. However, you can back the underdog with a bit more confidence if they happen to lose but get within the total points.
Total Points – There are two main options for betting on the total points – over and under. For every AFL match, a total points figure will be set. Betting on the over total points is recommended when two high scoring teams are playing each other. The under total is more suitable in the finals when scoring is harder.
First goal scorer – Bet on the AFL first goal scorer with this bet type. The forwards are generally the best bets and will come with better odds. But you can get good odds on a midfielder that kicks goals.
Multi-betting – Build a massive multi-bet on AFL matches during the season and finals.
Futures – Bet on the AFL Grand Final and other key AFL events before the season starts or during the season.
AFL Betting Strategies
Betting Promotions – During the season and AFL finals, most bookmakers will offer AFL betting promotions. Luckily at Bet King, we do the hard work and find the best promotions per week. Check in during the season and we’ll provide you with the latest AFL promotions.
Travel – In the AFL most teams are travelling fortnightly and this can impact their performance. Using Perth as an example, the Dockers and Eagles have to travel across country alot during the season and they do tend to struggle in away games. But when teams travel to Perth, they can struggle as well. Especially the week after a Perth match.
Injuries – If a team has key injuries, it’s best to back against them. For example, if Richmond is missing Dustin Martin, the chances of Richmond winning is much less as he’s such an important player. Injuries all affect the total points when teams are missing key players.
Byes – During the middle part of the season, each team will take a bye week. It’s important to note that teams that play after a bye are generally a better bet against a team that hasn’t had a bye yet.
Betting on underdogs – The AFL season is full of upsets and betting on the underdog can be profitable. This is especially true in the early rounds of the season when teams are still working on their game-plan and this can result in upsets.
Weather – The weather is a key element of AFL betting, especially when betting on the total points. In a rainy game, the total points is more likely to go under the points as scoring becomes harder. It also means the match is likely to end in a closer result which is handy for line betting on the underdog.
