Round 14 of the 2018 AFL season kicks off on Thursday Night at Optus Oval and concludes on Sunday at the MCG with a blockbuster rivalry between the Pies and the Blues. West Coast Eagles vs Essendon Bombers (Thursday, 8:10PM AEST)
The Bombers will face one of footy’s toughest tests on Thursday Night when they head West to take on the Eagles at Optus Oval. The Eagles will be desperate to return to winning ways after losing their pre-bye match to the Swans in Round 12. Meanwhile, the Bombers season is on the line as they sit 2 games + percentage out of the top 8, as we enter the back half of the 2018 season.
The Bombers lead the all-time head-to-head record against the Eagles with 28 wins to their 23. Of the 51 matches played, the away team has managed to win just 12, and in the last 10 matches played, both teams have won 5. The last match between these sides was in Round 9 in 2017, where the Bombers ran out 61 point winners at Etihad Stadium.
I’m expecting the in-form Eagles to be way too much for the Bombers to handle in Perth. They have the superior list and should get the job done, even without Kennedy and Darling in the forward line.

Port Adelaide Power vs Melbourne Demons (Friday, 7:50PM AEST)
Port Adelaide will host the Demons on Friday Night in what is shaping to be the match of the round. The Power backed up their Tigers scalp in Round 12 by making light work of the Bulldogs last weekend. Meanwhile, the Demons will be itching to rectify their terrible Queens birthday performance where they were dismantled by the Magpies.
The all-time head-to-head record between these two sides reads favourably for the Power, with 19 wins from 32 matches. They’ve also had the wood over them in their last 10 clashes, coming out on top in 7 of them. The most recent between them resulted in a win for the Demons, which came in Round 18, 2017.
Both teams have strong intentions to make some noise in September, which should make for an exciting, high pressure game on Friday Night. For me, Port Adelaide have the slight advantage, due to them being the home side.

Hawthorn Hawks vs Gold Coast Suns (Saturday, 1:45PM AEST)
The Hawks vs Suns clash will kick off a 3-game slate on Saturday in a match that isn’t going to set the footy world on fire… to say the least. The Hawks are coming into this one full of confidence from their win over the Power and will have fresh legs after having the bye last weekend. In contrast, the Suns are in absolute shambles. Just when you thought they had sewn up a much needed win – they blow a 40-point third quarter lead at home and lose to the Saints.
Not too much needs to be said about this one. The Hawks will run out comfortable winners in a game that could get ugly.

Collingwood Magpies vs Carlton Blues (Sunday, 3:20PM AEST)
Closing out Round 14 is the old rivalry between the Magpies and the Blues. The Pies are the form team of the competition and many are starting to believe they are genuine contenders, especially after their dismantling of the Demons in the Queen’s Birthday clash. In contrast, Carlton are having a terrible season, which was made even worse by their performance against the Dockers last weekend, where they were held goalless at half time.
Much like the Hawks vs Suns game, this one is going to be heavy one-way traffic. If Carlton forget to show up in the first half again, this one could get really ugly.
