2018 AFL Round 12 Preview and Betting Tips
We’re now into the Bye-Rounds and it’s the Eagles, Blues, Hawks, and Bulldogs who all have the weekend off to rest. The other 14 teams will make up the 7 games being played this weekend, headlined by the huge Queens Birthday clash between the Demons and the Magpies! Take a look below at SmitTips Round 12 AFL preview and betting tips.
Port Adelaide Power vs Richmond Tigers (Friday, 7:50PM AEST)
Round 12 of the AFL kicks off with an absolute cracker at Adelaide Oval, with the Power set to take on the reigning premiers, Richmond. These two sides are both expected to play a significant part in September, which should give this game a finals like feel. As it stands, Port Adelaide are in 9th position at 6-4 with a game in hand, while Richmond are in 2nd at 9-2.
Amazingly, in the last 17 times these two teams have played the home team has managed to win just 5 times. In those 17 games, Power have won 8, Richmond have won 8, and there’s been 1 draw (2012). Richmond won the only meeting between the two sides last season, defeating the Power by 13 points in Adelaide.
Port Adelaide will be desperate to get a win to stay in touch with the top 8, while Richmond will leave nothing to chance, as they have a 9 day break after this game, followed by a bye after the next. It will be a close battle, for sure, but without Dusty I’ll give Port the nod at home.
TIP: Power at the line (-4.5) – $1.92 at Ladbrokes
St Kilda Saints vs Sydney Swans (Saturday, 7:25PM AEST)
The lone Saturday Night game this weekend will feature the Saints and Swans at Etihad Stadium. The Saints have been extremely disappointing this season and have managed just one win from 11 games. On the other hand, Sydney have been good without being great and enter this match in 4th position at 8-3.
Saints fans would be well aware that they’ve struggled against the Swans in recent times, in fact, they’ve lost their last 6 matches against them by at least 40 points. The last time the Saints defeated the Swans was by 28 points in Round 9, 2012 at Etihad stadium.
The Saints have been really poor this year and are travelling back from their gruelling match against the Eagles in Perth last weekend. In contrast, Sydney played at home against the Blues last weekend and ran out comfortable winners. Take the Swans at the line, or at 40+ if you’re looking for more value.
TIP: Saints at the line (+26.5) – $1.92 at Sportsbet
Value: Swans by 40+ – $2.60 at Sportsbet
Fremantle Dockers vs Adelaide Crows (Sunday, 4:40PM AEST)
Round 12’s twilight game on Sunday will feature the Dockers and the Crows at Optus Stadium in Perth. Freo fans have seen their season go from bad to worse this week with Fyfe being ruled out of this weekend’s match and the Brownlow Medal conversation. Meanwhile, Adelaide are coming off a really poor loss at home to the Giants last weekend and will be desperate to turn their form around.
Adelaide have dominated Fremantle in their last 3 head-to-head’s, winning them by 33, 72, and most recently, 101! The last time Dockers defeated the Crows was at Subiaco Oval in 2014, where they won by 40 points.
Without Nat Fyfe I struggle to see how the Dockers will keep this one close. The Crows have by far the superior list and I have them covering the three-goal line quite comfortably.
TIP: Crows at the line (-18.5) – $1.92 at CrownBet
Melbourne Demons vs Collingwood Magpies (Monday, 3:20PM AEST)
The Demons and Magpies will close out Round 12 on Monday in the highly anticipated Queens Birthday clash! Both sides are in red-hot form and will go into this match with the confidence that they can get the job done. As it stands, Melbourne sit in 3rd position at 8-3, while Collingwood are in 7th position at 7-4.
The head-to-head results between these two sides is quite remarkable. Between 2007-2015 Collingwood won 10, drew 1 and lost 0 against the Demons. The Demons broke the streak in Round 18 in 2015 and went on to win the next 4 against Collingwood, before the Magpies broke that drought in the last game of 2017, defeating the Demons by 16 points.
Both teams have are in winning form, however, the way that Melbourne have been punishing teams is on another level. Emotions will be high on Monday, but I expect the Dees to get the job done.
