Footy fans around the country rejoice as Round 1 of the 2018 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. We’ll be offering previews of every round of the season and providing our value tips of the week, so join us below where we’ve kicked things off with the Round 1 edition of our 2018 AFL betting tips.

Richmond Tigers VS Carlton Blues (Thursday, 7:25PM AEDT)

The 2018 AFL Premiership season kicks off on Thursday Night with the reigning premiers taking on the young and energetic Carlton Blues. 2017 was an historic year for the Tiger Army, as they lifted the cup for the first time since 1980. Although usually taken with a grain of salt, their pre-season form was terrific and suggested that they may elude the famous ‘premiership hangover’. Their list is relatively the same as last years, so you should expect the same gameplan from Damien Hardwick’s men.

The Blues are a team that is expected to improve on last year’s 16th placed finish to potentially push for a finals position. They won 6 games last year with a very young squad, and with the experience gained and natural progression of their players we can see them getting around the 9-10 win mark this season. Their pre-season form was strong, defeating the Saints and Hawks in their 2 matches.

As expected the reigning premiers come into the season opener as extremely short favourites. However, after a shorter pre-season than the rest of the competition we can see them starting a bit slower than the way they finished 2017. We can still see them winning this one, but in a close margin than the Bookies suggest.

TIP: Carlton Blues at the line (+30.5) – $1.92 at Ladbrokes

Essendon Bombers VS Adelaide Crows (Friday, 7:50PM AEDT)

Essendon come into their first match of the year with a lot of excitement and expectation surrounding the club. They did well to finish in the top 8 last year after an extremely difficult 2016 season and will be looking to take the next step this year to push for top 4. They had an interesting JLT series, where they were flogged by the Tigers in JLT1, but bounced back to knock off the Cats in JLT2. All in all, they have a good list and should be hard to beat at home this season.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Crows start the season after their heartbreaking Grand Final loss in 2017. They had a dominant campaign but just couldn’t put the icing on the cake. Their JLT form was a little bit disappointing, but as stated before it isn’t always a true barometer of what’s to come. Their list remains fairly similar to 2017, so we can expect them to be more than competitive this season.

Like the Tigers, we feel that the Crows may take a bit longer than others to kick into gear due to their shorter pre-season. So we’ll be taking the Bombers at their short line in this one.

TIP: Essendon Bombers at the line (+5.5) – $1.92 at CrownBet

Port Adelaide Power VS Fremantle Dockers (Saturday, 4:35PM AEDT)

Port Adelaide made their intentions for the 2018 season clear when they signed 3 solid players in the primes of their career in the off-season. Watts, Motlop and Rockliff should add some class and depth to the Power outfit, which weren’t too far off the mark in 2017. Their pre-season form was strong and they have close to a full list to pick from. Expect them to come flying out of the blocks in 2018.

The Dockers are a side that comes into the new season with a young list and no expectations to set the house on fire. They had a poor 2017 and come into the season with a very similar list. All signs are showing that former Brownlow Medalist Nat Fyfe is back to full fitness, which is obviously a huge boost for the purple haze, however, we don’t see them causing the top teams too much discomfort in 2018.

We’re taking the Power at a generous line in this one. Wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up as a 50+ margin for the home side.

TIP: Port Adelaide Power at the line (-23.5) – $1.90 at Sportsbet

GWS Giants VS Western Bulldogs (Sunday, 1:10PM AEDT)

In our most recent post that provided our season predictions we had the Giants on top and our pick to win the flag this season. The depth of their list is endless and there are stars all over the park. They’ve now made back-to-back Preliminary Finals and we feel they’ll set the tone early in the 2018 season.

The Bulldogs fell outside the 8 last season after miraculously winning the flag in 2016. Many would agree that they overachieved in 2016 and we don’t think they have the list to make the huge jump back up the ladder. Although they will be competitive, we feel that they will find it hard in Round 1 when they take on the stacked Giants outfit.

We’re going with the home side to earn a comfortable win in Round 1. Expecting them to cover the line here.

TIP: GWS Giants at the line (-15.5) – $1.92 at Ladbrokes
