2018 AFL Finals Week 2 Betting Tips

We went a perfect 4 from 4 in our best bets for Week 1 of the finals and will be looking to back up again with some more solid tips this weekend. Without further ado, here are our 2018 AFL preview and betting tips for week two of the finals!

Hawthorn vs Melbourne (Friday, 7:50pm AEST)
What a First Semi Final we have on our hands with the Hawks taking on the Demons on Friday night at the MCG. It’s do or die for two of the leagues most supported teams as they fight for a place in the Preliminary finals against West Coast next week in Perth.

The Demons showed no signs of nerves in their first final in over 10 years as they took control of the match against the Cats from start to finish to run home as 29-point winners. There were stars all over the park for the Demons, with a number of their guns doing their usual work and a couple of surprise packets sharing the load. All-Australian midfielder Clayton Oliver was at his superb best with 30 touches and 6 tackles, while Angus Brayshaw (26 disposals) and Jack Viney (20 disposals, 11 tackles) helped with the grunt work. A very welcome sign for Demons fans was young key forward Sam Weideman tearing up the Geelong defence to finish with a stat line of 24 disposals, 7 marks and 3 goals.

Meanwhile, the Hawks are coming off an extremely disappointing performance against the reigning premiers in which they got blown out in the third quarter to eventually lose by 31 points. A number of their star players were well down on their usual outputs, including All-Australian pairing Luke Breust (11 disposals, 1 goal) and Jack Gunston (18 disposals) who managed just 1 goal between them. More bad news for the Hawks is that key defender Ben Stratton is out for the clash with the demons with a hamstring injury.

With so much at stake, we’re expecting both sides to come out firing in the opening quarter with a lot of energy being spent on big bumps, big tackles and gut running. However, when the game is played like this early on we always see tired bodies and a lot of space in the second half, which is where we expect the Demons to make their running. They’re the best team at winning the contested ball, but also have the elite skills and running capacity to get it done on the outside.

We’re expecting a close first half, with the Demons running out 15-20 point winners by the game’s end.

Collingwood vs GWS (Saturday, 7:25PM AEST)
The Second Semi Final of the weekend features the Magpies and the Giants on Saturday night at the MCG. There are no more second chances this season, which will make this match an absolute beauty between two highly skilled movers of the footy.

The Magpies will be disappointed that they couldn’t hold off the Eagles in their Qualifying Final last weekend. They led for a large majority of the match, but the Eagles options up forward and their ability to make the right decision at pivotal moments was the difference in the end. Big Mason Cox didn’t get near it, neither did Varcoe or Greenwood for the most part, while De Goey was also down on his usual output. On a positive note, Treloar, Howe and Goldsack were all welcome additions to the side and will be extremely important again this week.

As predicted, the Giants were simply too good for the Swans in their Elimination Final last weekend. Surprisingly, they were tougher than the Swans on the inside, but unsurprisingly, they were far too fast for them on the outside. Another positive for the giants was Zach Williams, who was really impressive in his first game of the season off half-back. However, star midfielder Josh Kelly is expected to miss this weekend after picking up and injury against the Swans.

Like many, we’re expecting this match to go down to the wire. If it was on a neutral ground we’d be happy to suggest a play on the Giants outright, but the fact that it’s being played at the MCG in front of 80+ thousand Collingwood supporters probably makes it an even money game.

We predict a tight contest from start to finish in this one, with our best bet being Giants with a 10.5-point start.

TIP: GWS at the line (+10.5) – $1.92 at BetEasy
