The 2017 State of Origin series resumes on Wednesday night with Game 2 of the series to take place. NSW heads into the match after winning the opening match. Will they claim the series? We take a closer look at the match in our NRL State of Origin Game 2 Preview and Betting Tips below.

New South Wales vs Queensland (Wednesday 8pm AEST)

Everything will be on the line in game 2 of the series with Queensland in an unusual situation – their backs are against the wall and they have made plenty of changes to their side. The expected change was made with Johnathan Thurston coming into the side for Anthony Milford. He has played 36 origins and only missed the opening game through injury.

The other changes are definitely positive as well for Queensland. They brought in players to make their debut but they have proved to already have an impact in the NRL in a big way. Jarrod Wallace will start at prop while Coen Hess will come off the bench and he has proven to be hard to handle. The backrower can play in the middle and we predict him to be out to target the opposition halves in defence. Meanwhile Billy Slater was selected at fullback which pushes Darius Boyd to unfamiliar territory at centre. He will be targeted in defence by NSW and whether he can manage in a position he has rarely played and hasn’t at origin level remains to be seen. However, Slater was a must to be selected as he brings plenty of experience and is a big game player – we still can’t understand his omission from the opening game.

The Queensland side definitely looks more threatening in attack and we believe they will bring a lot of energy to the match. Their young players will have a lot of pressure on them though with the game on the line and with the home fans against them.

New South Wales will field an unchanged 17 players on Wednesday night, something they haven’t done in over a decade. It will be a huge match up between the halves and it was NSW who arguably one that battle in game 1. However, the obvious difference is that Thurston makes his return which will put a lot of pressure on James Maloney and Mitchell Pearce to perform. Thurston is the expert professional and rarely chooses the wrong play. Pearce and Maloney will need to play at the same level and can’t afford to make a mistake or Thurston and Cooper Cronk will pounce.

However, it will be hard for Cronk and Thurston to pull the strings if their forward pack is losing the battle. In the opening game that was the biggest difference and we are predicting the NSW forwards to dominate despite the changes to the Queensland side. The NSW pack has a lot of x-factor players while none of them will take a step backwards. Meanwhile the outside backs of NSW hare proven origin players and we believe they will claim the series on home soil.

TIP: NSW at the margin (1-12) – $2.60 with Sportsbet

We are predicting a big battle in the middle of the field and we are going to stick with a forward to open the scoring. The forwards will control the majority of the ball and the Blues are notorious for hitting the short runner and especially Mitchell Pearce and James Maloney. The two halves are great at deceiving the defensive line into thinking they are hitting the sweeping runner but going short and there aren’t many players than Boyd Cordner at hitting that line and we are backing him to cross for the first try.

TIP: Boyd Cordner first try scorer – $21.00 with Sportsbet
