2017 NFL Week 5 Betting Tips

The 2017 NFL season continues this weekend and we take a look at the three primetime Australian televised matches and two other games with the best value. Continue reading for our NFL Week 5 Preview and Betting Tips.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs New England Patriots (Friday 11.25am AEST)
The New England Patriots return to primetime television and they will be looking to turn around their poor start to the season. Their opening game of the season was against the Chiefs on primetime and they suffered an embarrassing loss after leading the opening three quarters. The Patriots and Tom Brady will be looking for redemption on the big stage. Brady is leading the league in yards made but it hasn’t reciprocated into wins. The side had to rely on overtime to defeat the Texans while they suffered a loss last week to the Panthers.

The Buccaneers are 2-1 for the season but don’t be fooled but that. Their two wins came against the Bears and Giants, two sides who are struggling this year and have one win combined. Jameis Winston will need to be bigger on third down if they are to stand a chance. The quarterback has got to another first down only four times on 17 attempts over the past two weeks. They will have a strong chance of improving that record considering they are coming up against a poor Patriots defence but we are backing Brady to out shoot Winston in a shootout.

TIP: Patriots at the line (-5.5) – $1.90 at CrownBet

Houston Texans vs Kansas City Chiefs (Monday 11.30am AEST)
The Chiefs are the only undefeated team left in the NFL and they were forced to work for it on Monday Night Football against the Redskins last week. Once their running game kicked into gear, Alex Smith was able to convert a lot more of his passes and the defence did its job on the other end. The Chiefs benefited from penalties but we don’t believe they will rely on Monday morning.

Meanwhile the Texans are coming off a huge victory led by rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson. The quarterback didn’t disappoint in his match up with Marcus Mariota throwing for four touchdowns and rushing for one of his own. He will need to be at his best when he comes up against one of the best defences in the league, however, we think this Monday will be a wake up call for him.

TIP: Chiefs to win – $1.92 at Sportsbet

Chicago Bears vs Minnesota Vikings (Tuesday 11.30am AEST)
The Vikings suffered a huge blow last week with Dalvin Cook suffering a season ending injury. They suffered a hard fought loss to the Lions last week with second string quarterback Case Keenum unable to lead the side to a heroic victory. They will need more production from him but fortunately for them they will have a chance to recapture their momentum against a poor Bears side.

Chicago is one of the worst teams in the league. Last week they were blown off the park by the Green Bay Packers, a side who has been dealt lot of injury blows. Mike Gleenon isn’t doing the job at quarterback and the Bears will struggle to score against this offence.

TIP: Vikings – odds aren’t out yet

Buffalo Bills vs Cincinnati Bengals (Monday 4am AEST)
The Bills have shortened in price to win the Superbowl, and while we don’t think they are that good, the side has proved to have an exceptional defence. They have allowed only 54 points in their four games this year and the Bengals, who have struggle to score this year, will have a hard time putting up points. The Bills proved how good their defence was by shutting down the Falcons, who had the best offence last year.

Meanwhile the Bengals head into this game with only one win a year. It was a comfortable win, but it was also against the Browns. They will be hoping to ride their momentum into this week but we are predicting quarterback Andy Dalton to be caught out and it will result in the Bills earning the win.

TIP: Bills to win – $2.39 at Sportsbet

Detroit Lions vs Carolina Panthers (Monday 4am AEST)
Are the Lions the real deal? We will get a step closer to the answer this weekend and we are predicting them to earn the victory on home soil. The side has started the season 3-1 and their only loss came against the Falcons a fortnight ago. They bounced back strongly against the Vikings on the road and it was their defence which shone, forcing the Vikings into punting the ball and restricting them to just seven points.

Meanwhile the Panthers earned their best victory of the year, knocking off the Patriots. The side is 3-1 as well but they haven’t been as impressive in their wins. Cam Newton played one of his best games since the 2015 season. It is hot and cold thus far for him, as he was awful against the Saints’ defence, which is one of the worst in the league. Whether he will fire is a bigger question than whether the Lions are a contender.

TIP: Lions to win – $1.77 at William Hill
