2017 ICC: Australia v England Betting Tips

June 9, 2017 by Posted in Cricket Tips

Ashes are five months away but old rivals England and Australia will play a curtain raiser at Edgbaston on Saturday, June 10th. With the qualification hopes of Australia – as well as New Zealand and Bangladesh – hinging on this result, this Group A encounter promises to be a slugfest.

What a chance for England!
England are already through to the semifinal after clinical performances against Bangladesh and New Zealand. Their bowling came under pressure in the tournament opener against Bangladesh but they recovered well to limit them in the final overs. The match against New Zealand was a near-perfect one for the hosts.

The Poms now have a glorious chance of knocking out their favorite opponents, as a loss would send Aussies crashing from the tournament. Joe Root’s form with the bat is a major plus for Eoin Morgan who has multiple players scoring consistently right now. The only worry in that impregnable batting order is the lack of runs from Jason Roy.

With the ball, Chris Woakes’ absence is a major blow although Liam Plunkett and Mark Wood have made sure that it is minimal. The strength of this England side lies in their talisman all-rounder Ben Stokes who has not disappointed despite his injury worries.

Will Australia get a full game?
Call it a boon or a bane – Australia have had both their matches abandoned due to rain. If the abandonment gifted the Aussies, a point against trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand, it evened out by robbing them a win against Bangladesh. They would ideally have wanted to seal their progression by now but will not be bowing out without a fight.

With very little action in the tournament so far, the Aussie batsmen could not get into any rhythm. David Warner and Steve Smith remain their key players with all other batsmen still under cloud of inconsistency. Bowling remains their strong point with both Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood picking up form at the right moment.

Key players
Root will get his first tryst of Ashes action as England captain a little later in the year but this is a fantastic opportunity to lay the mark. With his form and consistency, Root may well push Australia out of the tournament.

Starc had to miss the IPL to recover from injuries and that seems to have paid well for Australia. His devastating pace and accuracy makes him a tough cookie in any format. If the visitors harbor any hopes of progression, it hinges on Starc’s performance with the ball.

England have happy memories of defeating Australia in Champions Trophy in 2004 and 2013 editions. Though the win-loss record in England stands 30-28 in favor of the Aussies, the hosts have won two of the last three encounters against them.

England will fancy their chances of a win, coming as it is with the added incentive of knocking out Australia. Back the hosts to win at odds of 1.91 (William Hill).

TIP: England to win – $1.91 at William Hill

Root and Smith will be the top players for their sides and back them to be the top batsmen for their sides respectively.

TIP: Joe Root England top runscorer – $3.75 at Sportsbet
