2017 French Open Women’s Final Betting Preview
In a field that had no Serena Williams, French Open 2017 Women’s section saw a mixture of expected and unexpected results. Third seed Simona Halep of Romania lived up to her pre-tournament favorites tag to reach the finals. Her task would be to overcome the unseeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia.
Halep’s journey so far
Halep is the 2014 French Open finalist but barring that, her performances in Grand Slams has been very poor. The Romanian had also twisted her ankle in the Rome final putting her participation under cloud. However, a very successful clay court season – one semi-final, one final and one title – meant that she still started as heavy favorite.
The third seed lived up to expectations and did not drop a single set until the quarters. Elina Svitolina in the quarters was on the brink of dumping Halep out leading 6-3, 5-1. However, Halep staged a miraculous escape saving a match point in the process and winning 12 of the last 13 games.
In the semis, Halep led from the front against Pliskova winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours of enthralling action. She now stands one win from becoming the world number one.
Ostapenko’s journey so far
The Latvian youngster, ranked 47th, has shattered many records by reaching the final. She is Latvia’s first major finalist, the youngest woman in a Slam final since 19-year-old Caroline Wozniacki at the 2009 US Open and the first unseeded player to reach the French Open final since 1983.
Ostapenko celebrated her 20th birthday with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 win over Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky. The former Wimbledon junior Champion has never been past the third round at a Grand Slam before but is enjoying every bit of the big stage at Paris this year.
The Latvian had to overcome experienced players in the last three rounds – Samantha Stosur (Australia), Wozniacki (Denmark), and Bacsinszky. All these matches went to the wire, which is an indication of Ostapenko’s power and will to fight.
Picks
Halep continues to be the darling of bettors as odds of 1.3 (Ladbrokes) make her the overwhelming favorite for the title. Ostapenko at odds of 4.0 (William Hill) is a rank outsider.
Considering the manner in which these two have been fighting it out, do not be surprised if the final goes to three sets. Back the pick at odds of 2.75 (William Hill).
TIP: Total sets to be three – $2.75 at William Hill
