2017 Confederations Cup Betting Preview

June 16, 2017 by Posted in Soccer Tips

For the 2018 World Cup finals hosts Russia, the Confederations Cup is a test of their preparations – both on and off the field. The eight-nation tournament runs from June 17th – July 2nd and will be a dress rehearsal for the next year World Cup.

The eight nations taking part in the tournament are the winners of six FIFA confederation championships and are joined by the defending World Cup champions Germany and the hosts Russia.

Portugal (European Champions), Mexico (North & Central America), Australia (Asia), Chile (South America), Cameroon (Africa) and New Zealand (Oceania) will join Russia and Germany for the tournament.

Group A – Russia, Portugal, Mexico, and New Zealand
Without a doubt, Portugal will be favorites to win the group – and even the tournament. The presence of Cristiano Ronaldo will add interest to their title charge with the talisman winning almost everything this season with Real Madrid. Almost the entire team that won them the Euro 2016 is back for what would be their Confederations Cup debut.

Mexico will be the underdog in the group with the team under Juan Carlos Osorio looking stronger than ever. After taking charge in 2015, the Colombian coach has seen his team lose only one competitive fixture. However, how much of that will translate into tournament success here is anybody’s guess!

Russia and New Zealand to be frank make up numbers in this group. It will be a huge surprise if any of these two sides progress to semi-finals.

Group B – Germany, Australia, Cameroon, and Chile
On paper, this should be the tougher of the two groups as all four teams start on an even keeling. This is thanks in no equal measure to the decision of Germany to field a second string squad. Only three World Cup winners are part of the German squad while newcomers get a chance to prove their worth. No matter what, the World Cup winners still look good to progress to the semis.

Chile has the habit of mocking odds in big tournaments – defeating Argentina to win the last two Copa America tournaments as also defeating Spain in 2014 World Cup. With Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal in their ranks, this side is capable of going further in this tournament. Back them to reach the semis from this group.

Cameroon recovered some of their lost mojo in the last one year and look set to stretch the favorites while Australia will be eager to surprise a few.

Portugal have the best squad to go all out and win the title. At odds of $3.50 (bet365), the Euro winners are the favorites to win the title.

TIP: Portugal to be champions – $3.50 at bet365

Germany irrelevant of the fact that this is their second choice team should provide Portugal their biggest threat. Odds of 3.5 (William Hill) on them winning the title are slightly aggressive but worth giving a thought. On the personnel front, Ronaldo at odds of $2.75 (William Hill) looks set to be the top scorer.

TIP: Ronaldo tournament top scorer – $2.75 at William Hill
