2017 British Open Betting Tips

2017 british open
We haven’t had the best run in our golf betting tips so far this year but with the third major, the 2017 British Open, kicking off Thursday night (AEST) we’ll hope to turn our luck around. The Royal Birkdale Golf Course in Southport, Merseyside will play host to the British Open for the tenth time as Swede Henrik Stenson will be looking to defend his title.

Stenson won the 2016 British Open by three shots over American Phil Mickleson for his first major title and has opened at $31 to go back to back.

The last nine majors have all been won by a different player, and since the likes of Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy haven’t been as dominant in majors over the last few years, the tournament is wide open.

Contrary to most British Open courses, Royal Birkdale isn’t exactly a long course, so the winner wont neccesarily need to be a long driver, they will need to be straight though. Fairways are extremely narrow and nearly all of them are lined by hilly roughs and bunkers. This brings straight drivers with less power like Sergio Garcia, Steve Stricker and Zach Johnson into the fold.

TIP: Steve Stricker to make the cut – $1.50 at CrownBet

While they might be thin, the fairways are extremely flat at Royal Birkdale. This is another factor that sets it apart from most links courses in the British Open rotation. This helps players who aren’t great fairway players and probably hinders guys like Jason Day, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth who eat bad lies for breakfast.

Due to these factors the field will likely be evened out and I think it’s defeinitely possible we see a tenth different major champion in a row. Rickie Fowler is one guy who hits it long and straight and is arguably the most in form player in the world at the moment. We picked him to win the US Open and he came up just short, it’s only a matter of time before this guy gets a major.

TIP: Rickie Fowler to win – $17 at Ladbrokes
TIP: Rickie Fowler top 10 finish – $2.38 at Sportsbet

The other guy we really like is Sergio Garcia. The Spaniard is in the top 30 players in the world at hitting the fairway and is in some great form after winning the Masters and his first major earlier in the year. He is also the master of the top 10 finish, claiming 23 of them in his career so far. Uber consistent player who should go well.

TIP: Sergio Garcia to win – $19 at Ladbrokes
TIP: Sergio Garcia top 10 finish – $2.63 at Sportsbet

For an outside shot, we really like odds of Zach Johnson. The accurate right hander hasn’t won a tournament since he won the British Open back in 2015 but the course suits him to a tee and he has obviously shown form in the Open Championship before. At $101 he could be a fair value play.

TIP: Zach Johnson to win – $101 at Ladbrokes
TIP: Zach Johnson top ten – $9 at Sportsbet

Top Aussies chances:
Jason Day – $26
Adam Scott – $26
Marc Leishman – $41
