2017 Australian Open: Women’s Final Betting Tips
The clock has been rolled back in the first Grand Slam of 2017. The rivalry that started in the family backyard and dominated the Tennis scene for so many years is back with a bang. Sisters Venus and Serena Williams will battle for the Australian Open crown at the Rod Laver arena on Saturday, January 28.
This clash will reignite the sibling rivalry between two of the most successful women in tennis. The 36-year-old Venus is in her second Australian Open final having lost the earlier one in 2003 to – no surprise – her sister Serena.
The 35-year-old Serena is a decorated winner here having won the title six times – the last time being in 2015. A win for Venus will bring her ninth career title while Serena will make it her 23rd Grand Slam title, to go past Steffi Graf’s record.
Interestingly, their combined age makes this final the most senior Grand Slam final in the history of Women’s tennis. Not even Venus herself would have predicted her golden run this year. This is her most successful Grand Slam campaign since 2009 and was based on typically gritty performances.
The 13th seed has outclassed and outgunned her rivals during a run which saw her play only one seed. The only time Venus has looked in trouble was against compatriot Coco Vandeweghe in the semis where she lost a set.
The younger Williams on the other hand continued her feat of not dropping a set en route the final – something which she did last year too only to lose to Angelique Kerber.
She faced only two seeds in the entire tournament – Barbora Strycova and Johanna Konta – and rarely looked in trouble through her run. A win will not only surpass Steffi’s record but also reclaim her lost world number one ranking.
Often in the past this rivalry has been touted as masterminded and stage-managed – especially during their prime. But this is one rivalry that has always enthralled the spectators. Serena leads her sister 16-11 in all meetings while in Grand Slams the record stands at 5-3 in favor of the younger Serena.
There’s no dearth of competitive spirit when these two meet as 11 out of the earlier 27 meetings has gone on to three-sets.
For all her well-documented health problems, Venus has done really well to come this far. It would be a worthy fairy-tale ending if she can win the title. Both players have come out saying that each of them is already a winner but Venus may just do the unthinkable by lifting the title. Back her at odds of $5 (William Hill) to do so.
Their history of tough battles makes one wonder if we will witness another three-set encounter. It’s a pretty safe punt in my opinion, and I’m happy to take both players to win at least one set.
TIP: Match to go to three sets – $3 at William Hill
