Federer Nadal Australian Open

If there is a dream final, this is it! The 2017 Australia Open Men’s Final will be played by the two legends of the modern game – Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal. From being written off as mere entrants, to confounding the critics, battling the odds and overcoming younger opponents – what these two have done is right out of a fairy tale. What this means for tennis fans is that we have a blockbuster Sunday in store on January 29th at the Rod Laver Arena.

A rivalry that has changed the face of modern tennis

Not so long ago, these two were the face of modern tennis, wowing audiences all over with their celebrated rivalry. However, this is the first time since the 2009 Australian Open final that these two are meeting in a Slam final.

Whatever the critics may say, this duo hasn’t stopped competing. Injuries notwithstanding, Nadal was ranked number one as recently as 2014. Federer finished 2015 ranked number two and was the finalist at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open the same year.

Unlike what we are used to, these two have reached the finals ranked as number nine (Nadal) and number 17 (Federer) seeds. Coming off an injury-riddled 2016, the two fierce competitors have leased new life into their rivalry.

Federer – racing past the young

Right after the draw was announced, everyone thought Roger would fall by the wayside as early as third round. It was not to be as Federer went past three top 10 players – Tomas Berdych, Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka – to underline his prowess on these fast courts. He also quelled any doubts on his fitness by surviving two five setters and laying a mark on a tournament he won four times.

Nadal – the gritty Spanish bull

Not even Nadal would have given himself a chance, but it’s a testimony to his fighting skills that the Spaniard could come this far. Even he played two five sets and the one against Grigor Dimitrov in the semi-finals was one for the record books. Fitness could be an issue, but the presence of old nemesis Roger should fire him up sufficiently.

Decorated rivalry

Nadal leads Federer 23-11 in their head-to-head and has won five of their last six meetings, although it was Federer who won their last match on hard courts. In the Australian Open meetings too, Nadal leads 3-0 including the epic 2009 final.

They have played each other in eight Grand Slam finals with Nadal winning six of those. 12 of their 34 meetings have gone to the deciding set, while three of the eight Slam finals have been five-setters. Brace yourselves for another epic match!

Men’s Final Betting

There’s literally nothing that separates them on current form and fitness, although Nadal leads Roger whenever it’s a case of one-on-one. Though he’s coming off a grueling five-setter and has one less day rest, the Spaniard should come up trumps. Back him using the CrownBet special which gives us a matched bonus bet if he loses in 5 sets.
