AFLW Grand Final
It’ll be a battle of defence vs offence as Brisbane host Adelaide in the AFLW Grand Final this Saturday. The final will be played as a curtain raiser to the Round 1 Queensland derby between Gold Coast and Brisbane at Metricon Stadium.

The match was originally scheduled to be played at the GABBA but due to the curator forgetting about the AFL season and beginning preparation for the 2017 Ashes at the end of the year, the match had to be moved down the road to the Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium. Brisbane should still have the support for the match, with the Queensland government announcing it will be free entry Saturday.

Brisbane have been the form side of the comp, drawing just one game through the 7-match regular season and looking fantastic in defence all season, allowing just 148 points, 35 less than their nearest opponents. A draw with Carlton in the last round was likely a product of the Lions already having booked a ticket to the Grand Final.

Adelaide, on the other hand, have been the most dominant offensive side in the competition. Spearheaded by star full forward Sarah Perkins by a stretch, their 291 points is 33 more than their nearest opponents. After losing to the Lions and then Melbourne the next week through the regular season, the Crows were a chance to miss the final, but a last round win over the Magpies saw them scrap through on percentage.

Their one meeting this year ended in a 3-point win for the Lions, in a game where Adelaide were arguably the better side but just couldn’t translate it on the scoreboard. Their ruck and midfield combo dominated the day, but Brisbane’s defence stood firm like it has for the majority of the season.

Although it’s set to be 26 degrees, there’s some chance for rain on the Gold Coast on Saturday, which could present problems for Adelaide’s key forward Perkins. Brisbane’s defence has kept games close all year, and if it does rain it should do even more to keep it a tight one. In a hard game to pick we like either team to win by 15 points or less here.
